Our client is a leading rail maintenance and engineering organisation responsible for the maintenance and overhaul of rolling stock and rail vehicles across the UK.

Due to continued growth, they are seeking aΒ Wheel Lathe Operative to join their engineering team in Ipswich. Any prior experience as a CNC Operator on Lathes or Mills will be considered.

The Role

Working within a busy rail vehicle maintenance facility, you will be responsible for the re-profiling and machining of wheelsets, ensuring all work is completed safely, accurately and in accordance with engineering standards and maintenance requirements.

You will play a key role in maintaining vehicle safety, performance and reliability whilst working within a safety-critical environment.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Operating wheel lathe machinery to re-profile rail wheelsets

  • Carrying out machining activities in line with approved maintenance procedures

  • Working to tight tolerances and engineering specifications

  • Completing all maintenance and inspection documentation accurately

  • Supporting workshop maintenance activities when required

  • Assisting with equipment commissioning and maintenance activities

  • Participating in training, competency assessments and technical briefings

  • Maintaining high standards of housekeeping and workshop safety

  • Supporting continuous improvement and 5S initiatives

About You

We are keen to speak with candidates who possess:

  • A minimum of 3 years' experience within an engineering or machining environment

  • Experience operating wheel lathes, CNC machinery or heavy engineering equipment

  • Strong understanding of machining principles and engineering tolerances

  • Experience working from technical instructions and controlled documentation

  • Excellent attention to detail and record-keeping skills

  • Ability to make sound engineering decisions

  • Good written and verbal communication skills

  • A strong commitment to health, safety and quality standards

Experience within rail, rolling stock, heavy engineering, manufacturing, maintenance depots or similar safety-critical environments would be highly advantageous.
