Sliding Head Programmer / Setter / Operator

Location: Bolton
Pay: £18 – £21 per hour
Hours:

• Monday–Thursday: 7:30am – 4:00pm
• Friday: 7:30am – 1:00pm
  Job Type: Full‑time, Permanent

About the Role

We’re recruiting for an experienced Sliding Head Programmer/Setter/Operator to join a precision engineering environment producing high‑quality components for a range of industries. You’ll be responsible for programming, setting, and operating sliding head CNC machines to tight tolerances, ensuring consistent quality and efficient production.

This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys technical machining work, problem‑solving, and taking ownership of their machine and output.

Key Responsibilities

• Program, set, and operate sliding head CNC machines (Citizen, Star, or similar)
• Create, edit, and optimise CNC programs to meet production requirements
• Carry out machine setups, changeovers, and prove‑outs
• Select and install tooling, collets, guide bushes, and fixtures
• Monitor machine performance and make adjustments to maintain quality
• Inspect first‑off, in‑process, and final components using micrometers, verniers, gauges, and shadowgraphs
• Maintain production output in line with schedules
• Support continuous improvement to reduce scrap and improve cycle times
• Perform routine machine checks and basic preventative maintenance
• Work collaboratively with production, quality, engineering, and maintenance teams

What We’re Looking For

• Experience programming, setting, and operating sliding head CNC machines
• Knowledge of Fanuc, Siemens, or Mitsubishi controls
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings
• Strong understanding of precision machining and tight tolerances
• Confident using precision measuring equipment
• Good problem‑solving skills and attention to detail
• Reliable, safety‑conscious, and able to work independently
• CAD/CAM experience is beneficial
• Engineering apprenticeship or relevant qualification preferred
