We are currently partnering with a North West Local Authority to recruit an Interim Commercial Building Surveyor to support the management of a diverse commercial and corporate property portfolio. This role offers the opportunity to work on a varied range of surveying, maintenance, refurbishment, and capital improvement projects across council-owned assets.

The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring the authority's buildings remain safe, compliant, and fit for purpose while delivering best value for residents and stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake condition surveys, defect inspections, and building pathology assessments across commercial assets.
  • Prepare specifications, schedules of works, drawings, and tender documentation.
  • Deliver planned maintenance, refurbishment, and capital works projects from inception through to completion.
  • Manage contractors and consultants, ensuring projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards.
  • Administer contracts and monitor contractor performance.
  • Provide professional advice on building maintenance, compliance, statutory obligations, and asset management.
  • Ensure compliance with CDM Regulations, Health & Safety legislation, and property-related statutory requirements.
  • Support the development and implementation of planned maintenance programmes and asset management strategies.
  • Liaise with internal departments, external stakeholders, tenants, and contractors.

Requirements

  • Proven experience working as a Building Surveyor within a commercial property, estates, asset management, housing, or local authority environment.
  • Strong knowledge of building construction, maintenance, repairs, refurbishment, and project management.
  • Experience preparing specifications, schedules of works, and tender documents.
  • Contract administration experience and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Working knowledge of public sector procurement procedures and contract management.
  • Sound understanding of building regulations, health and safety legislation, and statutory compliance requirements.
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
  • Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle (desirable).

Qualifications

Essential

  • Degree in Building Surveying or a related construction discipline.
  • Membership of a relevant professional body or substantial equivalent experience.

Desirable

  • MRICS qualification.
  • CIOB, CABE, or equivalent professional membership.
  • NEBOSH or IOSH Health & Safety qualification.
  • Experience working within Local Government or the wider public sector.
