Commercial Director in Hertfordshire

Our client is a leading civil engineering, groundworks and infrastructure contractor delivering complex projects across the UK. Due to continued growth and an expanding project portfolio, they are seeking an experienced Commercial Director to lead the commercial function and drive performance across the business.

This is a high-profile leadership appointment for an accomplished commercial professional with a proven track record within groundworks, civil engineering and infrastructure environments.

Reporting into the senior leadership team, the Commercial Director will take full responsibility for the commercial operation of the business, ensuring strong financial performance, effective governance and commercial excellence throughout the project lifecycle.

Key responsibilities include:

• Leading and managing the entire commercial function.
• Overseeing projects from tender stage through to final account and post-completion.
• Managing all procurement and buying activities.
• Driving commercial strategy and business performance.
• Full P&L responsibility.
• Producing and managing cashflow and pipeline forecasts.
• Overseeing management accounts and commercial reporting.
• Ensuring robust commercial governance and risk management.
• Supporting business growth and maintaining strong client relationships.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:

• Significant experience within groundworks, civil engineering and infrastructure contracting.
• A strong background in senior commercial leadership roles.
• Extensive experience managing the full commercial lifecycle of major projects.
• Strong working knowledge of NEC forms of contract.
• Experience within a self-delivery contractor, Tier 1 contractor, or ideally both.
• Exceptional commercial acumen with proven responsibility for profitability, forecasting and financial control.
• The leadership skills to build, mentor and develop high-performing commercial teams.

• Based from the Hertfordshire office with regular travel to project locations as required.
• Projects are located across Suffolk, the Midlands, Manchester and Scotland.
• Travel expenses will be covered where applicable.

This is a hands-on leadership position requiring a regular presence within the business and across project sites.

• Primarily office and site-based.
• Five days per week working from office, project locations or other business locations as required.
• Flexible working may be considered in exceptional circumstances but is not offered as a standard remote-working arrangement.
