Commercial Gas Engineer
North West / East Midlands / West Midlands
£40,000 - £45,000 Basic + Paid Travel + Overtime + Annual Bonus
Van with Private Use | No Working Away | 1 in 10 Call-Out | 25 Days Holiday + Bank Holidays
Permanent | Monday to Friday | 8:00am - 4:30pm
Commercial Gas Engineers are required to join an established building services contractor, working predominantly across long-term prison estate maintenance contracts throughout the North West and Midlands.
Around 90% of your workload will be within prison environments, carrying out service, maintenance, fault finding and reactive repairs across commercial gas, heating and associated HVAC plant.
The preference is for engineers based in the East Midlands, although applications are welcomed from Commercial Gas Engineers across the North West, West Midlands and East Midlands who are comfortable travelling across the wider region.
There is no working away, travel outside your standard working hours is paid at enhanced rates and the current call-out rota is only 1 in 10 weeks.
The Role
You'll work as a mobile Commercial Gas Engineer across an established portfolio of secure sites, carrying out both planned and reactive maintenance.
This isn't purely a boiler servicing role. You'll be expected to fault find across the wider mechanical installation and work on equipment including:
- Commercial gas-fired boilers
- Oil-fired boilers and heating equipment
- Pumps
- Air Handling Units (AHUs)
- Ventilation equipment
- General HVAC and mechanical plant
You'll manage your allocated jobs using a tablet-based CAFM system, completing the relevant service, compliance and statutory documentation as you go.
The role involves regional travel across the North West and Midlands, but you will return home rather than staying away overnight.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out PPM and reactive maintenance across commercial gas and heating systems.
- Service and maintain commercial gas-fired boilers and associated heating plant.
- Diagnose faults and complete breakdown repairs.
- Work across pumps, AHUs, ventilation equipment and wider HVAC plant.
- Carry out maintenance on oil-fired equipment where qualified to do so.
- Identify defects and complete repairs to ensure equipment is operating correctly.
- Complete statutory and compliance-related work in line with current gas regulations.
- Produce accurate service reports and maintenance records.
- Update and close jobs through a tablet-based CAFM system.
- Work safely within secure prison environments and follow individual site procedures.
- Participate in the out-of-hours call-out rota.
Paid Travel, Overtime & Call-Out
Travel outside of your standard 8:00am - 4:30pm working day is paid at an enhanced rate.
Depending on your home location and allocated sites, engineers can regularly accumulate additional paid travel hours each week, providing the opportunity to earn considerably above the basic salary.
Additional overtime is also available and paid at enhanced rates depending on when it's worked.
The current Commercial Gas Engineer call-out rota is approximately 1 in 10 weeks, with a £100 standby payment.
Any call-out attended attracts a minimum three-hour payment.
Out-of-hours calls are assessed by the management team before being passed to an engineer, so you'll only be asked to attend where a site visit is genuinely required. Even during a particularly busy standby week, around three to four call-outs would be typical.
What You'll Need
You'll need to be an experienced Commercial Gas Engineer with a background in service, maintenance, breakdowns and fault finding across commercial heating systems.
You'll ideally hold a good range of commercial gas qualifications, including:
- COCN1 / ICPN1
- CIGA1
- CDGA1
- CORT1
- TPCP1A
You don't necessarily need to hold every ticket listed above. Applications are welcomed from experienced engineers who hold relevant current non-domestic Gas Safe qualifications and have a strong commercial heating background.
You'll also need:
- Experience servicing and maintaining commercial boilers and heating systems.
- Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills.
- Knowledge of associated mechanical and HVAC plant.
- Experience with equipment such as pumps, AHUs and ventilation systems.
- A good general understanding of M&E building services.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Willingness to travel across the North West and Midlands.
OFTEC qualifications and experience working on oil-fired heating equipment would be advantageous.
Formal electrical qualifications would also be beneficial.
Previous prison or secure-estate experience isn't essential. However, you'll need to be comfortable working within secure environments and following the procedures that come with these sites.
Due to the nature of the contracts, appointment will be subject to satisfactory Enhanced DBS and CTC security clearance, which will be arranged by the employer.
