The Opportunity
We are currently recruiting for an experienced Commercial Gas Engineer to join a dedicated engineering team supporting a major Life Sciences contract in Darlington.
This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled engineer looking to work in a highly regulated and technically advanced environment, where safety, compliance and operational reliability are paramount.
You will play a key role in maintaining the commercial gas systems and associated mechanical plant across a modern facility supporting critical scientific and research activities.
A Typical Day
As a Gas Engineer, your day-to-day responsibilities will include carrying out planned preventative maintenance (PPM), reactive repairs, inspections and testing across commercial gas systems and associated mechanical plant.
You will service, maintain and fault-find on equipment including boilers, burners, water heaters and heating systems, ensuring that critical heating and hot water systems operate safely, efficiently and in line with relevant legislation and industry standards.
The role will involve diagnosing faults and completing effective repairs to minimise downtime, while carrying out gas safety inspections, statutory compliance checks and maintaining accurate maintenance records through CAFM systems.
You will also support wider mechanical maintenance activities when required, with opportunities to work across equipment such as pumps, valves, HVAC and water systems.
As part of the role, you may also coordinate specialist subcontractors, complete risk assessments and method statements, assist with remedial works and minor project quotations, and support the delivery of contract KPIs and service level agreements.
Strong communication and customer service skills will be important, as you will work closely with client representatives, contractors and wider site stakeholders.
About You
The successful candidate will ideally have:
- A recognised qualification in Plumbing & Heating, Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent discipline.
- Current Commercial Gas qualifications, such as CODNCO1, CIGA1, ICPN1, TPCP1A, CORT1 or equivalent.
- Proven experience as a Commercial Gas Engineer within Facilities Management, Commercial Buildings, Healthcare, Life Sciences, Manufacturing or another critical environment.
- Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills, with experience carrying out both planned and reactive maintenance.
- A good understanding of statutory compliance, health and safety legislation and industry best practice.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills.
Experience using CAFM systems, knowledge of BMS and additional mechanical skills would be advantageous. IOSH Managing Safely or similar health and safety qualifications would also be beneficial.
