Construction Manager 

My client, a leading civil engineering contractor, is seeking an experienced Construction Manager to join their team on a major micro tunnelling project.

Construction Manager Responsibilities

  • Manage the day to day delivery of a major micro tunnelling scheme, ensuring all works are completed safely, efficiently, and in line with programme requirements.
  • Oversee tunnelling operations, including Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) and Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) activities, ensuring works are delivered to the highest standards of quality and safety.
  • Lead and coordinate Site Agents, Site Engineers, Foremen, operatives, and subcontractors, promoting a collaborative and high-performing site environment.
  • Develop and implement construction programmes, ensuring labour, plant, materials, and subcontractors are effectively managed to achieve project milestones.
  • Ensure all works are carried out in accordance with project specifications, drawings, RAMS, permits, and company procedures.
  • Work closely with the Project Manager, commercial team, designers, and client representatives to resolve technical and operational issues.
  • Monitor project progress, identify risks and opportunities, and implement mitigation measures to maintain programme and budget targets.
  • Ensure quality assurance procedures are followed throughout the project, carrying out regular inspections and ensuring compliance with project specifications.
  • Promote a strong health, safety, environmental, and quality culture, ensuring full compliance with company policies and industry legislation.
  • Oversee site documentation, including progress reports, site diaries, inspections, quality records, and programme updates.
  • Support commercial activities by identifying variations, managing site costs, and contributing to project reporting and forecasting.

Construction Manager Requirements

  • Previous experience working as a Construction Manager on micro tunnelling, trenchless technology, utilities, or major civil engineering infrastructure projects.
  • Strong knowledge of Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) operations, Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD), shaft construction, pipe jacking, and associated tunnelling methodologies.
  • Proven experience managing multidisciplinary site teams and subcontractors on complex civil engineering projects.
  • Good understanding of temporary works, reinforced concrete, deep excavations, and underground construction techniques.
  • Strong planning, leadership, and organisational skills with the ability to deliver projects safely and efficiently.
  • Good knowledge of NEC contracts and project delivery processes is advantageous.
  • Excellent understanding of health & safety legislation and industry best practice.
  • Valid CSCS Card.
  • SMSTS qualification is essential.
  • First Aid at Work qualification is desirable.
  • HNC/HND or Degree in Civil Engineering (or equivalent) is preferred.
