Customer Accounts Controller

RETAIND Ltd

Customer Accounts Controller

Location: Coventry, CV2
Salary: £35,000+ per annum, depending on experience
Job Type: Full-time, Permanent, Office-based
Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:30am – 5:30pm

We are looking for a confident, organised and commercially aware Customer Accounts Controller to join a busy, fast-moving business in Coventry.

This is a varied office-based role combining customer account administration, credit control, sales team support and general office coordination. Although the formal credit control element is likely to account for around one day per week, the wider role is much broader.

You will be the person who understands customer account status, keeps the sales team informed, follows up on overdue payments, and helps ensure trading can continue smoothly with valued customers.

This is not a basic “send a reminder email and wait” position. The successful person will need to be confident on the phone, persistent, well-organised and able to build strong working relationships with both customers and colleagues.

The Role

You will work closely with a small sales team, supporting them by keeping accurate and up-to-date information on customer accounts, overdue balances, credit limits and payment commitments.

The business has around 180 active weekly customers and approximately £900,000 of sales per week. Most customers pay regularly and broadly within terms, but some require proactive chasing and careful management.

Your role will be to help maintain that balance: supporting payment collection while also maintaining positive customer relationships wherever possible.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitoring customer accounts, overdue balances and credit limits

  • Managing customers with invoices over 40 days old

  • Chasing overdue payments by phone and email

  • Building productive relationships with customers to encourage prompt payment

  • Keeping the sales team updated on account status, payment promises, risks and customer feedback

  • Working with sales colleagues where accounts need to be escalated

  • Allocating payments and supporting invoice-related administration

  • Reviewing aged debtor information and maintaining accurate customer records

  • Using Sage 50 accounting software

  • Supporting wider office administration duties once established in the role

What We’re Looking For:

We are looking for someone with strong organisation skills, telephone confidence and the ability to deal with customers professionally.

You do not need to be an accountant, and Sage experience is not essential as training can be provided. However, you must be comfortable speaking to customers, asking direct questions, following up persistently and keeping accurate records.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Previous experience in credit control, customer accounts, sales administration, accounts administration or a similar office-based role
  • A confident and professional telephone manner
  • Strong relationship-building skills with customers and internal teams
  • Excellent organisation skills and attention to detail
  • The confidence to chase slow-paying or difficult-to-reach customers
  • A resilient, proactive and reliable approach
  • Good communication skills and the ability to keep colleagues informed
  • A practical, commercially aware mindset
  • Good general administration skills
  • The ability to work well in a fully office-based role

Why This Role Matters:

The Customer Accounts Controller plays a key part in supporting the sales team and keeping the business moving.

Sales can only flow properly when the business has a clear understanding of customer account status, overdue balances, credit limits and payment commitments. The information you provide will directly support commercial decisions, customer relationships and day-to-day trading.

This role would suit someone who enjoys being central to a business, likes speaking to people, can deal with challenging customers professionally, and takes pride in keeping things organised.

Additional Information:

  • Full-time, permanent position
  • Fully office-based in Coventry, CV2
  • Reporting to the Director
  • Sage 50 used internally
  • Training available where required
  • 20 days holiday plus bank holidays
  • 3-month probation period
