Cyber Security Consultant – career path to Architect.
Avanti Recruitment
Cyber Security Consultant – career path to Architect.
£50,000 – £75,000 + bonus & benefits
Hybrid – Manchester, Bristol, Belfast or London - 2–3 days per week in the office
If you're working in cyber security and want to make the move into Security Architecture, this could be a very good next step.
We're working with a leading UK consultancy as they continue to grow their Security Architecture capability, supporting major programmes across government, defence, critical infrastructure and other complex, regulated environments.
You don't necessarily need to already have Security Architect as your job title.
We're interested in people coming from Security Engineering, Cyber Security Consulting, Cloud Security, Information Security or Security Assurance backgrounds who already understand how secure systems are designed and want to move further into architecture.
You'll work directly with clients, helping them understand security risks, define requirements and design secure technology solutions. Because of that, strong communication and client-facing skills are essential. You need to be comfortable discussing technical security problems with engineers and architects, but equally able to explain risks, options and recommendations clearly to senior stakeholders who may not have a security background.
The work can include:
- Security architecture and secure-by-design
- Threat modelling and security risk assessment
- Reviewing solution and infrastructure designs
- Defining security requirements and controls
- Cloud, infrastructure, network and identity security
- Working with technical teams to resolve security design problems
- Running workshops and gathering requirements from clients
- Presenting recommendations and explaining technical risk clearly
- Balancing security requirements against practical delivery and business needs
Experience with areas such as NIST, SABSA, TOGAF, ISO 27001, NCSC guidance, Zero Trust, IAM/PAM, cloud security or security assurance would all be useful, but we're not expecting one person to tick every box.
Certifications such as CISSP, CISM, CCSP, CIISec, SABSA or TOGAF are useful, but practical experience and the ability to work effectively with clients are just as important.
The role is hybrid, with typically 2–3 days per week based from an office in Manchester, Bristol, Belfast or London. Although this is a consulting role, frequent travel isn't expected. There may occasionally be a requirement to attend a client site, depending on the assignment.
Due to the nature of their client work, candidates must hold or be eligible for SC UK Security Clearance. This includes:
- Having been resident in the UK for the last 5 years
- No more than 29 consecutive days outside the UK during that period
- No more than 6 months outside the UK in any calendar year
Existing SC clearance is useful but isn't essential if you meet the eligibility requirements.
If you're currently a Security Engineer or Cyber Security Consultant and have wondered how you make the jump into Security Architecture, this is exactly the sort of opportunity I'd be interested in speaking to you about.
