Design Engineer – Pipework & Fabrication

Stowmarket, Suffolk

Salary: £40,000–£50,000 per annum

Due to continued growth within this established engineering and fabrication business, we are looking for a Design Engineer to join the team and play a key role in developing practical, technically sound designs that can be manufactured and installed efficiently.  This is a varied role offering the opportunity to work across the full project lifecycle, rather than being limited to design work alone.

The Role of Design Engineer includes:-

  • Working closely with the Project Manager, workshop and site teams, responsible for developing designs from initial concept through to manufacture and installation.
  • The role is primarily office-based, with regular interaction with the workshop and occasional visits to client sites and suppliers.
  • Carrying out site surveys and accurately measuring existing infrastructure to support design development.
  • Producing detailed 2D and 3D CAD drawings and models for pipework, steel fabrication and associated engineering projects.
  • Developing piping layouts, routing and fabrication designs using SolidWorks, AutoCAD Plant 3D or similar software.
  • Creating practical designs that consider manufacture, installation, materials and welding requirements.
  • Supporting design calculations and material selection to ensure projects meet relevant technical and safety requirements.
  • Working closely with clients to understand project requirements and translate them into workable engineering solutions.
  • Collaborating with workshop and fabrication teams to ensure designs are practical, efficient and suitable for manufacture.
  • Liaising with suppliers and subcontractors where required to support project delivery.
  • Providing technical support throughout fabrication and installation, resolving design queries and making adjustments where necessary.
  • Maintaining accurate design documentation, drawings, revisions and project records.
  • Ensuring designs comply with relevant engineering standards, specifications and health and safety requirements.

What We're Looking For

  • A background in mechanical design, pipework or steel fabrication, with the practical knowledge to develop designs that work both on paper and in the workshop.
  • Proven experience in mechanical, pipework or fabrication design.
  • Strong experience using 2D and 3D CAD software.
  • Experience with SolidWorks, particularly piping and routing, and/or AutoCAD Plant 3D.
  • A good understanding of steel fabrication, welding processes and industrial pipework.
  • Experience carrying out site surveys and taking accurate measurements from existing installations.
  • The ability to interpret client requirements and develop practical designs for manufacture.
  • An understanding of relevant engineering standards and technical documentation.
  • Excellent attention to detail and a methodical approach to design.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with clients, engineers and workshop teams.
  • A proactive approach to problem-solving and the ability to manage multiple projects.

This is an opportunity to join an established engineering business where your designs directly contribute to real-world projects. You'll be involved from the initial site visit through to fabrication and installation, working alongside experienced engineers and workshop professionals. No two projects are likely to be exactly the same, providing variety and the opportunity to continue developing your technical expertise.

If you're looking for a role where practical engineering knowledge is valued and you can see your work progressing from drawing board to finished installation, we'd be interested in hearing from you.
