Elevation Recruitment are pleased to be working with a leading engineering company, based in Sheffield, to help them recruit a Mechanical Design Engineer. Role Overview
We are seeking a skilled and motivated Mechanical Design Engineer to join our dynamic engineering team. The ideal candidate will have a solid background in mechanical design with a strong emphasis on hand calculations, as well as a working knowledge of welding techniques, fabrication processes, and structural/mechanical engineering principles. This role involves producing practical and efficient designs for custom mechanical components and assemblies used in a wide range of infrastructure applications.

Key Responsibilities
• Design and develop mechanical components and assemblies, from concept through to production
• Perform hand calculations (stress analysis, bolted/welded joint strength, load assessments, etc.) to verify design integrity
• Prepare and review technical drawings, models, and documentation using CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD)
• Liaise with the fabrication team to ensure designs are practical, manufacturable, and meet welding/fabrication standards
• Apply relevant British and international standards to design and calculations
• Provide technical support to project managers, fabricators, and installation teams
• Ensure all work complies with company quality, safety, and environmental standards

Requirements
• Qualified in Mechanical Engineering
• Proven experience in mechanical design engineering
• Strong competence in manual hand calculations for structural and mechanical components
• Solid understanding of welding principles, weld design, and fabrication processes (e.g., machining, cutting, assembly)
• Proficient in CAD software (SolidWorks preferred)
• Good knowledge of materials, tolerancing, and manufacturing methods
• Familiarity with BS, EN, and ISO design codes and standards
• Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
• Strong communication and teamwork skills

Desirable
• Experience in infrastructure or construction engineering projects
• Familiarity with FEA tools (e.g., ANSYS, SolidWorks Simulation)
• CSCS card or willingness to obtain one
