Osprey Engineering Solutions

Design Engineer

Location: Crook, County Durham, DL15

The company in question is a UK-based engineering and technology company specialising in pneumatics, hydraulics, environmental technology, linear automation and mechatronic systems.

We're looking for a talented Design Engineer to join our engineering team, working on innovative automation solutions that combine mechanical, electrical and software elements. You'll be involved in the full design process, from concept through to 3D CAD, prototyping and testing, with the chance to broaden into the electronic and control side of our systems as you go.

This is a great opportunity to work on varied, hands-on engineering projects while supporting both internal teams and customers with technical expertise.

The Role

As a Design Engineer, you'll be responsible for designing and developing reliable, cost-effective engineering solutions. You'll work closely with the engineering and sales teams to understand customer needs and turn ideas into practical, well-engineered products.

You'll also provide technical support during customer discussions, presentations and proposal development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop mechanical components, assemblies and automation solutions
  • Create 3D CAD models and engineering drawings using software such as SolidWorks and AutoCAD
  • Support prototype builds, testing, fault finding and design improvements
  • Integrate sensors, actuators and other mechatronic elements into wider mechanical designs
  • Work with engineering and sales teams to deliver high-quality solutions
  • Prepare technical documents, reports and project information

Skills and Experience Required

  • Proven experience in Mechanical Design, Product Design, Mechatronics, or a related engineering field
  • Strong 3D CAD skills and experience producing engineering drawings
  • Good understanding of mechanical design principles and how to turn concepts into manufacturable parts
  • Some exposure to automation, controls or electronics is useful, but full mechatronics expertise isn't required — we're happy to help you develop this
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Ability to work well as part of a team

Desirable Skills

  • Experience with robotics or industrial automation equipment
  • Familiarity with PLC programming, embedded systems or microcontrollers
  • Knowledge of PCB design or electronic fault finding
  • Understanding of Industry 4.0 and IoT technologies
  • Good communication skills and a practical, hands-on approach to engineering

Benefits

Pension

After successfully completing your probation period, you can join our workplace pension scheme. The company contributes 5%, and you contribute 3%, giving a total pension contribution of 8%.

Holidays

  • 20 days holiday per year
  • An additional day is added for each year of service, up to a maximum of 25 days
  • Christmas closure and bank holidays are not taken from your holiday allowance

Working Hours

  • Monday to Thursday: 9:00am – 5:00pm
  • Friday: 9:00am – 4:00pm

We're looking for someone who enjoys solving engineering design challenges and wants to be part of a team developing innovative automation solutions.
