Design Manager
Building Careers UK
A long established and highly regarded main building contractor with a strong reputation for delivering new build and refurbishment projects across a range of sectors is looking to appoint an experienced Design Manager to join the team.
With a diverse portfolio of projects across the region, the business has built a strong reputation for delivering high-quality schemes through a collaborative and well-structured approach. Their projects span a variety of sectors, providing an excellent opportunity for a Design Manager to work across challenging developments and gain exposure to different construction methodologies and project environments.
The company operates with a strong focus on quality, technical excellence and project delivery, working closely with clients, consultants, supply chain partners and internal operational teams to deliver successful outcomes.
This is a live-project, delivery-focused Design Manager position, rather than a predominantly pre-construction role. You will be closely involved with projects through the construction stages, working alongside the Contracts Managers, to coordinate design information, resolve technical issues and ensure the design process keeps pace with the programme.
The role would suit a Design Manager who enjoys being hands-on and involved in the delivery of projects, taking ownership of design coordination and playing a key role in overcoming technical challenges and ensuring projects progress efficiently on site.
The Role
As Design Manager, you will take ownership of the design coordination process throughout the construction and delivery stages of live projects.
You will act as the key link between the project team, consultants, subcontractors and design teams, ensuring design information is coordinated, technically compliant and available to the site team when required.
Working closely with the Project teams, you will identify potential design issues at an early stage and drive solutions through to completion, ensuring design development does not impact the construction programme.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design coordination process across live construction projects from commencement through to completion.
- Work closely with Contracts Managers and operational teams to ensure design information supports the construction programme.
- Coordinate architects, consultants, engineers, subcontractors and specialist designers.
- Manage and monitor design deliverables against the project programme.
- Chair design coordination meetings and ensure actions are progressed through to resolution.
- Review drawings, specifications and technical information to identify clashes, omissions and potential construction issues.
- Ensure design information is issued to site in a timely manner.
- Provide technical and design support to the operational team throughout construction.
- Coordinate subcontractor and specialist design information.
- Identify design risks and work with the project team to develop practical solutions.
- Assist with buildability reviews and value engineering where appropriate.
- Ensure design changes are properly recorded, communicated and incorporated into project documentation.
- Liaise with clients, consultants and the wider design team to resolve technical and design-related issues.
- Monitor design progress and highlight any issues that could affect programme, cost, quality or delivery.
- Support the project team through to completion, including the coordination of outstanding design information and as-built requirements.
About You
The successful candidate will have proven experience as a Design Manager working for a main contractor, with a strong background in managing design through the delivery stages of live construction projects.
You will be confident working alongside site-based teams and understand the practical requirements of delivering construction projects on site. The ability to identify design issues early, coordinate multiple stakeholders and drive solutions through to completion is essential.
Experience across a wide range of sectors would be advantageous, together with a strong understanding of construction methodology, technical design and the interface between design and site delivery.
The Opportunity
This is an excellent opportunity to join a well-established contractor with a strong pipeline of work and a varied project portfolio.
You will have the opportunity to take genuine ownership of the design function on live projects, working as an integral part of the delivery team and playing a key role in ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently, to programme and to the required quality standards.
