A leading UK and Ireland building and civil engineering contractor is seeking to appoint an experienced Design Manager to join their growing regional team. The business has a strong established presence across the UK and Ireland, delivering complex, high-value projects across a wide range of sectors, underpinned by values of commitment, collaboration, and care.
Due to continued growth and an expanding project pipeline, this opportunity has been created to provide additional resilience within the design function. The role will support the successful delivery of a portfolio of commercial office and healthcare projects, contributing to the coordination and management of design across multiple technically challenging schemes.
This is a key position within the project lifecycle, offering involvement from early design development through to construction issue and project completion. The successful candidate will work closely with internal project teams, external consultants, subcontractors, and clients to ensure fully coordinated, compliant, and buildable design solutions are delivered in line with programme and commercial requirements.
The Design Manager will be responsible for managing the full design process, ensuring commercial, contractual, technical, programme, and buildability considerations are effectively integrated. They will oversee both internal and external design teams, ensuring the production and delivery of high-quality design information that meets project requirements and supports successful site delivery.
The role will involve managing the development of design from concept through to construction issue, ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation, standards, and codes of practice. A key responsibility will be maintaining control of design information, including design programmes, design responsibility matrices, and information release schedules.
Working closely with project leadership teams, the Design Manager will support the development of construction programmes, procurement strategies, and value engineering opportunities. They will also contribute to the management of change control processes, variations, and design scope adjustments, ensuring alignment with commercial and delivery objectives.
The role will include leading design coordination meetings and workshops, managing the RFI process, and maintaining clear and effective communication across all project stakeholders. This includes clients, consultants, subcontractors, and internal delivery teams, with a strong emphasis on proactive engagement and relationship management.
A key part of the role will also involve supporting health, safety, and quality processes, including CDM compliance, site safety planning where required, and the implementation of robust quality assurance and inspection and test planning procedures. The Design Manager will also support BIM processes and contribute to the ongoing development of digital design and information management standards.
To be considered for this position, candidates should hold a relevant construction or design-related qualification and have proven experience operating as a Design Manager within the construction industry. Strong leadership, communication, and organisational skills are essential, along with a detailed understanding of construction processes, coordination, and buildability.
Experience with document control systems, BIM workflows, and platforms such as Viewpoint would be advantageous, along with strong IT proficiency, particularly in Microsoft Office applications.
