Design Manager – Facade & Building Envelope

Mor-tech Consultants Ltd

Position Overview

We are seeking a highly technical Design Manager to lead the envelope and facade package for a landmark 16,500-capacity arena development. This role is responsible for managing the design process from detailed stage through to construction, focusing on complex geometry, structural glazing, acoustic cladding, and roofing systems. You will coordinate between the architectural design team, structural engineers, and specialist envelope subcontractors to deliver a high-performance building skin that meets exceptional thermal, acoustic, and aesthetic standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design Coordination: Lead the technical review of all facade, roofing, and external cladding drawings, ensuring absolute alignment with architectural and structural intent.
  • Technical Compliance: Validate that all envelope designs meet stringent building regulations, focusing heavily on fire safety (CWCT standards), weatherproofing, and thermal performance.
  • Acoustic Integrity: Oversee the design of specialized acoustic containment envelope systems to ensure the venue meets strict external noise breakout limitations.
  • Interface Management: Resolve critical interface details between the primary structural steel frame, concrete slabs, glazing systems, and architectural feature cladding.
  • BIM & Clash Detection: Utilize 3D BIM models to coordinate envelope packages, identify design clashes early, and manage the Request for Information (RFI) process.
  • Value Engineering: Identify opportunities for material optimization and buildability improvements without compromising design quality or acoustic performance.

Experience and Qualifications Required

  • Project History: Proven track record as a Design Manager delivering complex, large-scale building envelopes (£10M+ value) on stadiums, arenas, or major commercial projects.
  • Technical Expertise: Deep understanding of CWCT testing, rainscreen cladding, curtain walling, structural glazing, and single-ply or standing-seam roofing systems.
  • Software Proficiency: Advanced capability in Autodesk Revit, Navisworks, and BIM 360/Procore environments for design coordination and drawing management.
  • Qualifications: Degree in Architecture, Structural Engineering, Facade Engineering, or Construction Management.
  • Certifications: Valid CSCS Card and active professional membership (e.g., RIBA, CIOB, or Society of Facade Engineering) is highly desirable.
