The role & about the client: ITS Building People are recruiting on behalf of a leading specialist contractor delivering complex projects across the data centre, critical infrastructure and energy sectors.
Our client has an established reputation for successfully delivering technically challenging design and build projects throughout the UK. Due to continued growth, they are seeking an experienced Design Manager to join their team on a major hyperscale data centre development in West London.
The project involves the delivery of a large-scale data centre campus incorporating two hyperscale data centres, an office building and an electrical substation. Early phases of the project have included demolition, remediation, utility diversions, site re-levelling and enabling works, progressing into the full construction phase.
The successful candidate will be responsible for leading the design process from pre-construction through to project completion, ensuring all design information is coordinated, compliant, buildable and delivered in line with programme, commercial objectives and client requirements.
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Lead the design process from tender stage through to project completion.
- Manage the design programme, ensuring information is released in line with procurement and construction activities.
- Coordinate architects, consultants, subcontractors and specialist designers to deliver accurate and timely design information.
- Ensure all designs comply with Employer's Requirements, Building Regulations, CDM Regulations and statutory obligations.
- Chair regular design coordination meetings and monitor consultant performance.
- Identify design risks, technical issues and opportunities for value engineering.
- Review design information to ensure buildability, coordination, programme compliance and cost certainty.
- Manage design change control throughout the project lifecycle.
- Provide technical support to the construction team, resolving design queries during delivery.
- Promote Safety in Design principles and engineering best practice across all disciplines.
- Coordinate production of as-built information, commissioning documentation and O&M manuals for project handover.
- Build strong working relationships with clients, consultants and internal project teams.
- Mentor and support Design Coordinators and Assistant Design Managers.
- Proven experience managing design delivery from pre-construction through to project completion.
- Strong technical understanding of construction design, engineering principles and design management.
- Experience managing design programmes, technical reviews and consultant coordination.
- Excellent knowledge of Building Regulations, CDM Regulations and construction compliance.
- Experience identifying and implementing value engineering opportunities.
- Strong understanding of buildability, technical coordination and design risk management.
- Previous experience working on data centres, mission-critical or major construction projects would be advantageous.
- Degree qualified or equivalent professional experience.
- Relevant professional qualification (RIBA, CIOB, ICE or equivalent) desirable.
- CSCS Card.
