Rate: £450 - £500 per day (depending on experience)
Duration: Project-specific contract – initially 8 weeks, with review to extend
The Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced Design Manager to join our team on a major hospital fit-out project in North-West London (NW3). Working for a leading M&E Fit-Out Contractor, you will be responsible for managing the design and technical submissions, design documentation, and coordination activities are delivered to programme and in accordance with project requirements.
This is an excellent opportunity for a proactive and technically strong Design Manager with experience of healthcare, commercial, critical environment, or large-scale M&E projects.
Key Responsibilities
Design Management
- Manage and coordinate the complete design process for Mechanical and Electrical fit-out works.
- Lead design review meetings with consultants, clients, subcontractors, and project teams.
- Ensure design deliverables are issued in accordance with the project programme.
- Monitor design progress and identify risks, delays, and opportunities.
- Manage and maintain the design responsibility matrix.
- Coordinate design activities between M&E disciplines and other trades.
Technical Submissions
- Prepare, review, and manage technical submissions, material approvals, samples, and equipment datasheets.
- Ensure submissions comply with project specifications, client requirements, HTM standards, and relevant British Standards.
- Track approval status of technical submissions and expedite responses where necessary.
- Maintain submission registers and document control procedures.
Design Coordination
- Coordinate M&E designs using BIM and CAD platforms.
- Review consultant and subcontractor drawings for buildability and compliance.
- Identify and resolve technical clashes through multidisciplinary coordination.
- Support the production and review of construction drawings and installation details.
- Attend coordination workshops and design team meetings.
Project Delivery Support
- Work closely with Project Managers, Site Managers, Commercial Teams, and Supply Chain Partners.
- Ensure design information is issued in line with procurement and construction programmes.
- Support commissioning and handover activities.
- Review and coordinate O&M manuals, as-built drawings, and handover documentation.
- Assist with change management, design development, and value engineering initiatives.
Compliance & Quality
- Ensure all designs comply with current legislation, health and safety requirements, and project standards.
- Maintain compliance with CDM Regulations and project-specific governance procedures.
- Support quality assurance processes and design audits.
- Ensure documentation is maintained in accordance with client and company procedures.
Required Experience
- Proven experience as a Design Manager within the M&E, Building Services, Fit-Out, or Main Contracting sectors.
- Strong experience managing technical submissions and consultant design teams.
- Experience delivering healthcare, hospital, pharmaceutical, critical environment, or large-scale commercial projects.
- Good understanding of mechanical and electrical building services.
- Experience coordinating design through BIM and common data environments.
- Knowledge of HTM standards and healthcare project requirements would be highly advantageous.
- Strong understanding of design management processes and project delivery.
Qualifications
- Degree, HND, or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, Construction Management, or related discipline.
- Relevant professional memberships (CIBSE, IET, CIOB, etc.) desirable.
- CSCS Card (appropriate level) preferred.
Skills & Attributes

- Ability to manage multiple design packages simultaneously.
- Detail-oriented with a proactive approach to problem-solving.
- Commercial awareness and understanding of project delivery requirements.
- Competent in Microsoft Office, BIM platforms, and document management systems.
