Working pattern: 6 days per week, various shift patterns between 32.5 and 36 hours per week (options include 8:30am–2:25pm, 36 or 52 weeks per year; or 6:00am–12:30pm, 52 weeks per year). Morning central cleaning positions are also available from 6am, and many staff combine House and Central Cleaning roles.
Uppingham School is an independent co-educational boarding and day school for 11 to 18-year-olds, located in the beautiful market town of Uppingham in Rutland. Job purpose
To supervise and be responsible for all cleaning activities within academic buildings across the school and to lead a team of Domestic Cleaners to provide a sufficient cleaning service to the highest of standards. To ensure cleaning standards are maintained, applied consistently, and developed further, and that staff are suitably trained to maintain standards both internally and in line with any applicable regulations and legislation. You will maintain a close working relationship with the Assistant Cleaning Manager, working together on a number of tasks and activities.
What you'll be doing
Working under the direction and guidance of the Assistant Operations Manager, you will:
- Be courteous to colleagues and pupils and provide a welcoming environment to parents, contractors, conference delegates, and other visitors
- Work independently to complete the daily/weekly tasks assigned by your line manager to a high standard
- Organise cleaning schedules of work areas for cleaning staff to accomplish high standards, amending schedules as required including for staff absence, term start/end, or visiting parents
- Provide induction training for new staff members, and continue coaching, mentoring, motivating and appraising staff to maintain high performance
- Undertake checks of cleaning standards in work areas of central buildings, providing feedback to individual staff members and escalating to your line manager where required
- Monitor, control and distribute cleaning product stock
- Report equipment faults and act appropriately to ensure faulty equipment is not used until repaired or replaced
- Report staff absence accordingly and undertake return to work interviews
- Support and organise domestic staff during Buttery service
- Comply fully with Health & Safety, Hygiene and Infection Control regulations, including chemical safety (COSHH) and the wearing of protective clothing as required
- Ensure that issued uniform is always worn, and kept fresh, clean and presentable
- Attend professional training as required, keeping up to date with online training

Desirable: knowledge of health & safety requirements, an understanding of COSHH, and previous experience using industrial cleaning equipment.
