Hours: Monday–Friday, 8:00am–5:00pm
We are recruiting for an experienced Electrical Design Engineer to join a well-established and growing engineering business specialising in critical power and power generation solutions.
This is an excellent opportunity for an Electrical Design Engineer with experience across generator systems, power generation, LV electrical distribution or critical power to take a key role in the design and delivery of technically complex projects.
The position is based from the company's Derbyshire operation, with hybrid/remote working available, and will involve projects across sectors including data centres, critical facilities, healthcare, industrial and utility applications.
The Role
As Electrical Design Engineer, you will be responsible for the electrical design and technical delivery of diesel, gas and hybrid generator systems, working across projects from initial design through manufacture, FAT, installation and commissioning.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Electrical design of diesel, gas and hybrid generator systems
- Producing single-line diagrams (SLDs), control schematics, wiring diagrams and cable schedules
- Generator sizing based on load analysis, starting currents, harmonics and duty cycles
- Design of ATS/AMF panels, synchronisation panels, load-sharing systems and metering
- Selection and specification of alternators, circuit breakers, CTs, protection relays and control equipment
- Configuration of generator controllers including Deep Sea, ComAp and Woodward
- Developing control strategies for auto/manual operation, synchronisation, load sharing, load shedding, alarms and shutdowns
- Designing electrical protection schemes including over/under voltage, frequency, reverse power, earth fault and short-circuit protection
- Integration of generator systems with BMS, SCADA and remote monitoring systems
- Providing technical support during panel assembly and factory testing
- Supporting and conducting Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and resolving technical non-conformities
- Supporting site installation, commissioning and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT)
- Carrying out or supporting insulation resistance, functional, load, synchronisation, black-start and emergency-operation testing
- Producing technical documentation including test reports, O&M manuals and as-built drawings
- Working closely with mechanical, controls and fuel-system engineering teams
- Liaising with clients, consultants, utilities and other project stakeholders
- Supporting technical clarifications, project planning and cost estimation
- Ensuring designs comply with relevant IEC, IEEE and ISO standards, electrical codes and grid requirements
About You
We are interested in speaking with Electrical Design Engineers who have experience within power generation, generators, critical power, LV distribution, switchgear, controls or a closely related electrical engineering environment.
Ideally, you will have:
- Strong electrical design engineering experience
- Experience designing LV power distribution and/or generator systems
- Ability to produce and interpret SLDs, electrical schematics and wiring diagrams
- Knowledge of electrical protection, circuit breakers, CTs and protection relays
- Experience with generator controls, synchronisation and load-sharing systems would be highly advantageous
- Experience with Deep Sea, ComAp or Woodward controllers would be beneficial
- Knowledge of BMS/SCADA integration
- Experience supporting FAT, SAT and commissioning activities
- An understanding of relevant electrical standards and regulations
- Strong technical problem-solving skills
- Ability to communicate confidently with clients, suppliers and multidisciplinary engineering teams
Experience within data centres, standby generation, critical infrastructure, hospitals or industrial power systems would be particularly relevant.
What's on Offer?
£60,000 – £70,000 basic salary, depending on experience, with hybrid/remote working available.
You'll be joining an established engineering business working on technically challenging power-generation projects, with the opportunity to be involved throughout the full project lifecycle from initial electrical design through manufacture, testing and commissioning.
