Electrical Design Manager - South
Calibre Search
Location: South East England
Salary: c. £48,000 - £55,200 + £5,700 car allowance/company car + up to 10% bonus
The Opportunity
An established specialist engineering business is looking to appoint an Electrical Design Manager to support the delivery of electrical projects across the South East.
Despite the title, this is not a traditional consultancy-based electrical design role. It would suit an experienced electrician or electrical professional from a commercial/industrial contracting background who is looking to move into a more technical, client-facing and management-focused position.
The business delivers electrical installations associated with refrigeration and retail environments, with the role covering everything from initial site survey and design through to costing, procurement, installation and final handover.
The Role
You will take ownership of projects from the initial brief through to completion, working closely with clients, project managers, CAD technicians, electricians, subcontractors and suppliers.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Carrying out site surveys and establishing the most practical and cost-effective electrical solution.
- Producing and updating electrical designs, drawings, specifications, bills of quantities and scopes of work.
- Providing accurate electrical loadings and power requirements for new submains.
- Liaising with CAD technicians to ensure drawings accurately reflect project requirements.
- Producing project estimates by obtaining supplier and subcontractor quotations and working to client-specific rates.
- Procuring materials, equipment and subcontract labour once projects are approved.
- Briefing electricians, subcontractors and project managers on project requirements.
- Providing technical guidance and resolving electrical design issues throughout the project lifecycle.
- Visiting sites for surveys, handovers, snagging and final account/audit activities.
- Ensuring testing, commissioning and relevant documentation are completed in accordance with current regulations.
- Managing labour, material and plant costs against agreed budgets.
- Supporting the delivery of projects in line with company HSE procedures and client requirements.
- Managing relationships with regional electricians and electrical subcontractors to ensure agreed service levels are maintained.
There will be some travel across the region, particularly for initial site surveys, although the role can be predominantly home/desk-based during quieter periods.
What We're Looking For
The ideal candidate is likely to be a qualified/approved electrician with a strong commercial or industrial electrical background.
You may have experience in:
- Commercial electrical installations
- Industrial electrical work
- Retail or supermarket fit-outs
- Electrical contracting
- Refrigeration-related electrical installations
Direct electrical design experience is not essential. The business has successfully developed people from a trade background into this type of position and is open to someone who has the right electrical knowledge, attitude and communication skills but wants to progress away from purely site-based work.
Strong communication skills are important, as you'll regularly liaise with clients, project managers, electricians and subcontractors.
A background in refrigeration would be advantageous but is not essential.
Package & Progression
The starting salary is expected to be around £45,000, although there is flexibility for the right person. Candidates joining on a development plan may start at a lower point within the band, with progression towards a full salary of approximately £55,200 as they develop into the role.
The package also includes:
- £5,700 car allowance or company car
- Up to 10% annual performance-related bonus
- Structured development and on-the-job training
- Opportunity to develop from an electrical trade background into a technical/design management position
- Exposure to a variety of commercial and industrial projects
This is an opportunity for an experienced electrician to take the next step in their career, moving into a role with greater responsibility for design, costing, client liaison, project delivery and management.
