Main Tasks & Responsibilities:

Duties

Receives instructions from the Maintenance Supervisor and Area Control Engineers.

Perform installation and modifications to equipment as directed.

Work with minimum of direct supervision on allotted tasks within nationally recognised regulations and company procedures, eg. I.E.E. Regulations.

Produce diagrams for communication purposes, explaining problems and suggestions for repair.

Perform other tasks related to the work of the maintenance department as directed by the Maintenance Supervisor.

Keep areas of work in a clean and tidy condition.

Ensure safe working practices are understood and adhered to.

To ensure that logs are kept of planned maintenance activities, and that job cards are completed as appropriate, and the CMMS system is kept up to date with the planned maintenance tasks.

Assist in the training and development of the Electrical Apprentices.

Documentation Requirements

Assist in the Collection of engineering data related to Maintenance Duties and Responsibilities.

Use of the CMMS system to pan the maintenance activities and produce accurately generated work records.

General Duties & Responsibilities

Ensure collection of data/operating instructions of new plant and inclusion of maintenance requirements in CMMS system. 

Work within nationally recognised regulations and company procedures (e.g. BS7671 I.E.E Regulations, Health and Safety at Work Act, Electricity at work Regulations, safe systems of work).

Produce diagrams for communication purposes, explaining problems and suggestions for repair.

Perform other general tasks related to the work of the engineering & production departments as directed by Leading Technician.

Train and instruct other engineering personnel or trainees.

Ensure safe working practices, and Risk assessments are understood and adhered to.

Ensure that work records are kept relating to plant, planned maintenance activities and assist in the development of computer-based asset and resource management systems.

Health, Safety & Environment (HSE)

Adhere to all applicable HSE regulations, BAL safety policies and procedures.

Report all incidents, near misses and accidents through the company reporting tool and to your immediate line manager without undue delay. Where required to do so, assist with the timely investigation and actions thereafter.

Where required to do so, provide information to assist in incident investigations. Understand that CCTV may be used in an incident investigation and could be used as evidence in further disciplinary proceedings.

Do not undertake any task that you have not received training or instruction on (practical or formal) and report this to your immediate line manager without delay.

Where required to do so, Issue and manage works permits according to company or departmental procedures.

Any employee with personnel responsibilities, must review their area of responsibility risk assessments, training, and competency requirements to ensure all significant risks are recognised with a suitable hierarchy of control to mitigate the risk.

Where you are responsible for a visitor or contractor attending site to ensure they are suitably inducted and booked into the attendance system prior to their arrival.

Familiarise yourself with your department rules and safety documentation, their location and raise any discrepancy to your immediate line manager.

Personnel who are responsible for contractors on site, shall adhere to the BAL supplier prequalification requirements and manage their contractors on site.

Section 7 (Health and Safety at work act 1974)

General duties of employees at work

It shall be the duty of every employee while at work—

(a) to take reasonable care for the health and safety of himself and of other persons who may be affected by his acts or omissions at work; and

(b) as regards any duty or requirement imposed on his employer or any other person by or under any of the relevant statutory provisions, to co-operate with him so far as is necessary to enable that duty or requirement to be performed or complied with.

Section 8 (Health and Safety at work act 1974)

Duty not to interfere with or misuse things provided pursuant to certain provisions.

No person shall intentionally or recklessly interfere with or misuse anything provided in the interests of health, safety or welfare in pursuance of any of the relevant statutory provisions.

Qualifications

Essential to the role

  • ONC in Electrical Engineering or NVQ Level 3 in Electrical.
  • BS7671 I.E.E Regulations.
  • Working knowledge of relevant electrical engineering principles and practices or relevant industry in engineering and maintenance fields.
  • Good working knowledge of electrical engineering procedures and systems to fulfil the Maintenance Duties and Responsibilities.

Desirable

  • Apprentice trained in Electrical Duties.
  • Knowledge of AC/DC Motors operation.
  • A good understanding of the I.E.E Regulation and implementation of.
  • Knowledgeable in the area of Predictive Maintenance.
  • Experience in working with a Computer Maintenance Management System.
  • Working knowledge and experience of CDM regulations.

Skills

A sound knowledge of the I.E.E.  Regulations and electrical supply regulations.

Conversant with regulations and amendments which arise, in relation to safe working practices, the specialised requirements for high voltage systems and the nature of electrical hazards which could lead to personal injury or fire.

Understands the engineering database systems as relevant to planned maintenance and logging of shift activities.

Ability to work with Information Technology Communication, installing fibre optic cables and UTP cables.

Knows the testing procedures for portable appliance testing, and completion of documentation.

Ability to carry out inspection and testing of Electrical fixed wire installations.

Ability to design and install cable management systems.

Able to design and calculate cables sizes and select the correct types for the applications of machine installation.

Able to design simple electrical systems and draw schematic diagrams then transfer the information into practical use.

Knows how to use universal measuring instruments as well as some specific company related instruments.

An understanding of the working and construction of DC/AC machines

Be able to design and manufacture electrical control panels.

Understands National and International codes and symbols used on drawings and specifications.

Knows all the Health and Safety rules applicable to each department regarding their own and other operator’s safety.

Knows all the fire and evacuation procedures as well as understanding all the automatic fire extinguishing equipment and how to lock it off when working in protected areas.

Knows and implements a Safe Lockout/Tag Out system of work.
