Eletcrical Engineer - BESS

Spencer Ogden

Senior Electrical Engineer – Solar & BESS

Location: UK – London, Edinburgh or Durham
Working Pattern: Hybrid
Contract: 6-month rolling contract
IR35: Inside IR35
Start Date: ASAP

The Opportunity

Spencer Ogden is supporting a leading renewable energy developer with the appointment of a Senior Electrical Engineer to support an expanding portfolio of Solar PV, Battery Energy Storage (BESS) and Private Wire projects across the UK and Ireland.

This is an exciting opportunity to join an established renewable energy developer and take a hands-on role across the full project lifecycle, from early-stage development and electrical design through to procurement, construction, commissioning and handover.

The successful candidate will have genuine electrical engineering and design responsibility, rather than a background focused primarily on coordination, project management or reviewing standardised designs.

The Role

You will work as part of a small, specialist electrical engineering team, providing technical expertise across multiple concurrent renewable energy projects.

The role will involve providing electrical engineering support across Solar PV, BESS and Private Wire projects and supporting projects through multiple lifecycle stages, including development, design, procurement, construction, commissioning and handover.

You will develop electrical solutions from an early stage and define infrastructure and equipment requirements, while supporting feasibility studies and technical optioneering to identify technically robust and commercially viable solutions.

You will contribute to the development of electrical engineering standards, technical specifications and Employer's Requirements, as well as reviewing and challenging engineering designs produced by consultants, contractors and OEMs.

The role will also involve supporting procurement activities through the technical and commercial assessment of tender submissions, resolving technical clarifications and providing engineering input into project decisions.

You will provide technical guidance to less experienced engineers and support the resolution of electrical engineering, technical interface and delivery challenges across projects.

A key part of the position will be identifying and managing engineering risks, ensuring appropriate mitigation measures are implemented and supporting the consistent application of engineering standards and good engineering practice.

You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams across electrical, civil, mechanical, controls, commercial and project delivery functions, providing technical input during construction, commissioning and key project milestones.

Depending on your experience, you may also provide specialist technical support across 132kV and 400kV infrastructure.

The Ideal Candidate

We are particularly interested in engineers who can demonstrate broad, hands-on electrical design experience within renewable energy or electrical infrastructure projects.

You should hold a Degree in Electrical Engineering or have equivalent engineering experience, with a demonstrable track record of delivering infrastructure or energy projects.

Experience within Solar PV, BESS or closely related renewable energy sectors is highly desirable, particularly where you have supported projects across multiple lifecycle stages from development and design through to construction and commissioning.

You should have strong electrical engineering fundamentals and experience across a broad range of systems relevant to renewable energy projects. This may include high voltage systems, protection and control, power electronics, SCADA and communications, and balance of plant systems.

Experience working within multidisciplinary project teams is important, along with the ability to provide technical direction to engineers, consultants, contractors or OEMs.

You should have a strong understanding of UK electrical standards, regulations and grid requirements applicable to renewable energy projects, together with excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

The ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities is essential, as is the confidence to operate within a matrix environment and influence technical decisions across different teams.

Desirable Experience

Chartered Engineer status, or working towards Chartered status, would be advantageous.

Experience with DIgSILENT PowerFactory or other power system modelling tools would also be beneficial, particularly experience reviewing and understanding electrical system studies.

Experience supporting 132kV or 400kV infrastructure, together with NEBOSH or IOSH qualifications, would be advantageous.

A full UK driving licence is also desirable.

Working Arrangements

This is a hybrid position, with the successful candidate able to work from either the London, Edinburgh or Durham locations.

The role will involve a combination of home working, office collaboration and travel to project sites, project meetings, workshops and key project activities across the UK and Ireland.

During periods of construction, commissioning and major project milestones, increased site attendance may be required, so flexibility and a willingness to travel are important.

Why Apply?

This is a fantastic opportunity to join a renewable energy developer working across a growing portfolio of Solar PV and BESS projects.

You will have the opportunity to influence electrical solutions from the early development stage through to project delivery, while working alongside experienced engineering, project development and technical teams.

If you are an Electrical Engineer looking for a role where your technical judgement, design capability and renewable energy experience can make a genuine impact, Spencer Ogden would like to hear from you.
