Dovetail and Slate
Job Title: Functional Skills Tutor (English & Maths)
Location: Staffordshire area
Salary: From £30,000 per annum
Contract: Permanent, Full-Time
The Opportunity
Are you a passionate English or Maths tutor looking for a teaching role where your skills genuinely change lives?
We are recruiting for an inspiring Functional Skills Tutor to join a leading education provider within a secure youth custodial setting. In this role, you will deliver City & Guilds qualifications from Entry Level 1 to Level 2. Teaching small, focused groups of up to 12 young learners, you will help them develop essential literacy and numeracy skills, build confidence, and gain the qualifications they need to unlock employment opportunities and build a brighter future.
What You Will Be Doing
Engaging Delivery: Plan and deliver inclusive Functional Skills lessons, making English and Maths practical, accessible, and relevant to real-world success.
Individualised Learning: Conduct initial assessments using diagnostic tools (such as BKSB) to map out tailored Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) for each learner.
Targeted Support: Adapt your teaching methods to support a wide range of educational backgrounds, individual abilities, and additional learning needs.
Exam Preparation: Monitor progress closely, keeping young learners motivated and thoroughly prepared for their assessments and examinations.
Collaborative Working: Work alongside youth justice staff, support practitioners, and employability teams to ensure a safe, positive, and cohesive learning environment.
What We Are Looking For
Qualifications: A Level 3 qualification in Maths and English is essential. A Level 5 teaching qualification (PGCE, Cert Ed, DTLLS, or equivalent) is highly desirable.
No Teaching Qualification? No Problem! If you have the subject expertise and a passion for teaching, our client will fully fund, support, and guide you to achieve your Level 5 teaching qualifications on the job.
Experience: Proven experience delivering Functional Skills Maths or English qualifications. Experience within youth justice, adult education, or further education is a major plus.
Key Skills: Strong classroom management, excellent lesson planning, and the ability to handle administrative tracking with great organisational skills.
Please note: Due to the secure nature of this environment, the successful candidate will be required to undergo an enhanced background check and clear standard security clearances.
Why Apply?
This is a stable, highly rewarding position with an established, Gold-accredited 'Investors in People' organisation committed to your professional growth and well-being. You will enjoy small class sizes, regular daytime hours with no take-home marking, and a supportive team environment where you can see the direct, daily impact of your work.
