Location: Hampton (Hybrid) with travel across Thames Water project sites

Rate: Up to £450 per day

Contract: Initial 6 Months

Engagement: Opportunity to work Outside IR35, subject to individual project assessment

The Opportunity

Our client is seeking an experienced Environmental Advisor to provide specialist environmental advisory services across a portfolio of major Thames Water AMP8 infrastructure projects.

This is an opportunity for an experienced environmental professional who can operate with a high degree of autonomy, providing practical environmental advice throughout both the pre-construction and delivery phases of complex civil engineering schemes.

You'll work alongside project leadership teams, technical specialists and client representatives to identify environmental risks, develop practical solutions and ensure projects remain compliant with contractual and statutory obligations.

This assignment is ideally suited to someone who enjoys influencing project outcomes, challenging constructively where required and building trusted relationships across multidisciplinary teams.

Whilst the initial contract is six months, there is a significant pipeline of AMP8 work, providing excellent potential for long-term engagement.

Scope of Services

The successful consultant will provide environmental expertise across multiple projects, including:

  • Providing specialist environmental advice throughout pre-construction and construction activities.
  • Developing, reviewing and maintaining Environmental Management Plans (EMPs).
  • Advising on environmental risks relating to ecology, biodiversity, conservation and contaminated land.
  • Undertaking environmental assurance visits across project sites and providing practical recommendations.
  • Reviewing environmental risks and identifying proportionate mitigation measures.
  • Collecting, analysing and reporting environmental performance data.
  • Preparing technical reports, presentations and environmental documentation.
  • Advising project leadership teams on contractual and statutory environmental obligations.
  • Reviewing client requests, providing professional recommendations and challenging where requests fall outside contractual scope.
  • Managing priorities across multiple concurrent projects.
  • Working collaboratively with design, commercial and operational teams to support successful project delivery.

About You

We're looking for an experienced Environmental Advisor who can provide credible, pragmatic environmental advice across complex infrastructure projects.

You'll be confident working independently, capable of influencing project teams and clients, and comfortable challenging decisions where necessary to ensure environmental compliance and best practice are maintained.

You'll have excellent communication skills, be commercially aware and capable of building trusted relationships across multidisciplinary teams while balancing environmental requirements with project delivery objectives.

Previous experience supporting pre-construction, Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) or major infrastructure schemes will be highly advantageous.

Essential Experience

  • Significant Environmental Advisor experience within Civil Engineering, Utilities or major Infrastructure projects.
  • Strong understanding of UK environmental legislation and regulatory compliance.
  • Experience developing and implementing Environmental Management Plans (EMPs).
  • Experience supporting projects during pre-construction and/or ECI phases.
  • Knowledge of ecology, biodiversity, conservation and contaminated land.
  • Experience undertaking environmental inspections, audits and site assurance activities.
  • Experience managing environmental requirements across multiple concurrent projects.
  • Strong stakeholder management, presentation and report writing skills.
  • Ability to confidently influence project teams and challenge where appropriate.

Qualifications & Professional Membership

Essential

  • Degree (or equivalent industry experience) in Environmental Management, Environmental Science, Ecology, Geography or a related discipline.
  • CSCS Card.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.

Highly Desirable

  • Membership of the Institute of Sustainability and Environmental Professionals (ISEP) / Institute of Environmental Management & Assessment (IEMA), ideally PISEP / PIEMA or above, or working towards professional membership.
  • Environmental auditing experience (e.g. ISO 14001).
  • Thames Water Passport and/or EUSR Water Hygiene.

Desirable Experience

  • Thames Water or wider UK Water sector experience.
  • Major infrastructure or utilities projects.
  • Early Contractor Involvement (ECI).
  • Tier 1 contractor experience.

Working Pattern

  • 42.5 hours per week.
  • Hybrid working with one day per week working from home.
  • Regular travel across Thames Water project sites and the Hampton office.

Engagement

This assignment is offered on an initial six-month contract.

There is a strong pipeline of AMP8 work providing the opportunity for ongoing engagement beyond the initial term.

The client anticipates that this assignment may be suitable for an Outside IR35 engagement, however status will be determined following an individual project assessment.
