About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Environmental Advisor to join a major Nuclear project based in Leiston, Suffolk. This is an excellent opportunity to play a key role in supporting environmental compliance and sustainability across a complex construction environment.
Working closely with project teams, contractors and stakeholders, you will provide expert environmental advice, monitor compliance with environmental legislation and project requirements, and promote best practice throughout the construction lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
- Undertake regular site inspections of contractors' work areas, identifying good practice, deficiencies and non-compliances, while raising observations and environmental issues where appropriate.
- Provide clear and practical advice on environmental legislation, permits, consent conditions and planning constraints applicable to construction activities.
- Review contractors' Environmental Management Plans (EMPs), Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS) to ensure compliance with environmental legislation, Development Consent Order (DCO) requirements and project standards.
- Support internal audits and self-assessment activities, ensuring site operations remain compliant with legal obligations, environmental procedures and industry best practice.
- Support and, where required, lead environmental incident investigations, producing detailed reports and recommending corrective and preventative actions.
- Identify contractual and environmental risks, escalating issues to the Environmental & Sustainability Manager in a timely and proportionate manner.
- Promote positive environmental behaviours across construction teams, driving continuous improvement in environmental performance.
- Assist in the development and implementation of environmental initiatives that support project sustainability objectives.
- Build strong working relationships with contractors, project teams and key stakeholders to ensure environmental compliance is embedded throughout the project.
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Experience in an Environmental Management role within a fast-paced construction, infrastructure or industrial environment.
- Strong knowledge of UK environmental legislation applicable to construction or industrial projects.
- Understanding of client and contractor responsibilities under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (CDM).
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and influencing skills with the ability to engage effectively at all levels.
- The ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities in a site-based environment.
- A degree (or equivalent qualification) in Environmental Management, Environmental Science or a related discipline.
- Experience working within an Environmental Management System (EMS), ideally aligned with BS EN ISO 14001.
- Experience working on major infrastructure, energy or nuclear projects.
- Knowledge of Development Consent Order (DCO) controlled projects or similarly regulated environments.
- Experience liaising with environmental regulators, auditors and client environmental teams.
