As an ESOL Specialist, you'll plan and deliver engaging English language sessions for adult learners at a range of levels, helping them build the language skills, confidence, and independence they need for daily life, further study, and employment. Sessions may take place in community settings, adult education centres, or via local authority-commissioned programmes, depending on placement.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver ESOL sessions tailored to a range of ability levels, from Entry 1 to Level 2 (or equivalent CEFR levels)
- Assess learners' starting points and track progress against individual learning goals
- Differentiate teaching materials to support learners with varying literacy backgrounds, including pre-literate learners where relevant
- Support learners working towards functional goals such as employment, citizenship, or further education
- Maintain accurate attendance and progress records in line with funding and reporting requirements
- Work collaboratively with programme coordinators, local authority contacts, and community partners
- Create an inclusive, welcoming learning environment that respects learners' diverse backgrounds and experiences
What We're Looking For
- A recognised ESOL/TESOL teaching qualification (e.g. CELTA, Trinity CertTESOL, Level 3/4 Award or Certificate in Teaching ESOL, or equivalent)
- Experience teaching English to adult speakers of other languages, ideally in a community or further education setting
- A good working knowledge of ESOL curriculum frameworks and assessment approaches
- Excellent communication skills and cultural sensitivity when working with learners from diverse backgrounds
- An enhanced DBS check (or willingness to apply for one) and the right to work in the UK
