Job description

Operating as a field-based professional, you will act as the legally recognised Competent Person responsible for executing mandatory statutory engineering examinations across an assigned regional portfolio. This mobile role demands autonomous schedule management, technical precision during on-site inspections, and strict enforcement of UK Health and Safety legislation. You will be responsible for validating machinery integrity, managing immediate field defects, and providing technical advisory services directly to clients to ensure total legal compliance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Statutory Thorough Examinations: Perform comprehensive, safety-critical field inspections and technical audits on a wide variety of industrial engineering plant and equipment.

  • Rigorous Reporting & Certification: Produce detailed, legally binding safety reports and certificates for each asset examined. Categorise findings using formal regulatory metrics (e.g., immediate dangerous defects vs. time-bound alerts).

  • Field Defect & Risk Escalation: Provide immediate on-site safety intervention when dangerous defects are uncovered. Manage critical escalations, enforce equipment isolation protocols, and formally report non-compliance to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) where mandatory.

  • Written Schemes of Examination (WSE): Review, evaluate, and establish safe, risk-proportionate inspection frequencies and criteria by authoring or modifying Written Schemes of Examination.

  • Territory & Schedule Autonomy: Manage daily travel, site arrival protocols, and high-volume inspection calendars efficiently to maintain optimal client satisfaction and contract delivery within your assigned geographical region.

Key Inspections:

LEV Statutory thorough examination and testing under Regulation 9 of the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations.

  • Scope: Measurement of hood face velocities, duct transport velocities, static pressure drops, and filtration integrity checking.

LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations)

  • Scope: Passenger/goods lifts, mobile and tower cranes, overhead gantry systems, hoists, MEWPs, forklift trucks, and associated safety lifting tackle/accessories.

PSSR (Pressure Systems Safety Regulations)

  • Scope: Steam boilers, high-pressure hot water systems, air receivers, industrial refrigeration plant, pressure vessels, and protective pipeline instrumentation.

PUWER (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations)

  • Scope: Complex factory production lines, power presses, mechanical guarding, emergency stop systems, and general industrial work tools.

Person specification (Essential)

  • Professional Registration: Must be actively registered as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng) via an engineering council-approved institution.
  • Academic Background: Minimum of an HNC, HND, or BEng/MEng degree.
  • Regulatory Expertise: Deep technical fluency in the Approved Codes of Practice (ACoPs) for COSHH (LEV), LOLER 1998, PSSR 2000, and PUWER 1998.
  • Hands-on Experience: 5+ years of practical field engineering experience in commissioning, maintaining, diagnosing, or repairing industrial plant, commercial extraction systems, or heavy machinery.
  • Mobility & Logistics: Full clean UK driving licence is mandatory. Comfort with regional mobile working and variable field site environments, prepared to stay away overnight as required.
