Finance Controller – Part Time (3 Days per Week)
Location: Broughton / Hybrid Working
Salary: Up to £55,000 pro rata, depending on experience

Howard James Recruitment are working with an exciting and rapidly growing technology-led business to recruit an experienced Finance Controller. This is an excellent opportunity for a commercially minded finance professional looking for a broad and hands-on role within an innovative and fast-paced environment.

This position offers the opportunity to take ownership of the finance function, working closely with senior leadership and playing a key role in supporting strategic growth plans. The successful candidate will enjoy a varied role, covering everything from day-to-day finance operations through to board reporting, forecasting and financial planning.

The Role

Key responsibilities will include:

Bookkeeping & Day-to-Day Finance

  • Managing day-to-day accounting processes using Xero, including invoicing, supplier payments, expenses and reconciliations

  • Overseeing accounts payable and receivable processes

  • Managing expenses and company card processes

  • Processing payroll and liaising with external payroll providers

  • Maintaining accurate financial records and controls

Management Accounts & Reporting

  • Running month-end processes including accruals, prepayments and reconciliations

  • Producing monthly management accounts, including P&L, balance sheet and cash flow reporting

  • Providing variance analysis against budgets and previous periods

  • Maintaining a clean and accurate trial balance

Financial Planning & Business Support

  • Producing board and management reporting packs

  • Supporting cash flow forecasting and financial modelling

  • Assisting with strategic decision-making by providing financial insight and analysis

  • Supporting fundraising activities and investor reporting where required

Compliance & Financial Controls

  • Supporting year-end audit and statutory reporting processes

  • Managing VAT returns, corporation tax and external advisor relationships

  • Ensuring compliance with HMRC and Companies House requirements

  • Reviewing and improving financial systems, controls and processes

About You

We are looking for someone who can combine strong technical accounting skills with commercial awareness.

You will ideally have:

  • ACA, ACCA or CIMA qualification

  • 3–7 years post-qualified experience

  • Experience producing management accounts and managing month-end processes

  • Strong understanding of reconciliations, VAT and financial controls

  • Advanced Excel and financial modelling skills

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to present financial information clearly to non-finance stakeholders

  • Previous experience using Xero would be advantageous

Desirable Experience

  • Experience working within a growing SME, technology or start-up environment

  • Experience supporting grant claims or R&D tax processes

Package

  • Part-time role – 3 days per week, with potential to increase to full time in the future

  • Hybrid working available

  • 25 days holiday plus bank holidays (pro rata)
