Finance Manager in Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire

Northern Retrofit is an East Yorkshire-based specialist delivering energy-efficiency improvements and property services across the domestic and social housing sectors. Its services include insulation, property maintenance, air source heat pumps, renewables, battery storage and solar installations, with PAS-compliant delivery and MCS-certified installations.

With ambitious plans to double the size of the business over the next three years, this is an exciting opportunity to join a growing company and play an influential role within its leadership team.

The Opportunity

As Finance Manager, you will take ownership of the company’s day-to-day financial operations, controls and reporting.

Working closely with the Directors and external accountants, you will provide accurate, timely and commercially meaningful financial information to support decision-making, cash management and sustainable growth.

This is a hands-on and varied position that combines transactional oversight, management accounting, financial planning and commercial business partnering. You will also help develop the finance team, improve financial understanding across the wider business and introduce systems and processes capable of supporting the company’s future growth.

Key Responsibilities

• Take ownership of the company’s day-to-day financial operations and controls.
• Prepare accurate monthly management accounts, including profit and loss, balance sheet and cash-flow reporting.
• Produce clear commentary on performance, margins, project profitability and key variances.
• Manage cash flow, working capital, aged debt and short- and long-term cash-flow forecasting.
• Lead the annual budgeting process and maintain rolling financial forecasts.
• Oversee payroll, supplier payments, expenses and company credit cards.
• Maintain accurate balance-sheet reconciliations, accruals and prepayments.
• Monitor work in progress, committed costs, revenue recognition and contract margins.
• Provide commercial insight and practical recommendations to the Directors and leadership team.
• Manage Construction Industry Scheme requirements, including subcontractor verification, deductions, returns and record keeping.
• Maintain financial oversight of grants, funding streams and funded projects.
• Ensure grant expenditure is accurately recorded and supported by appropriate evidence.
• Act as the principal contact for external accountants and support year-end accounts, tax work and statutory submissions.
• Coordinate VAT, PAYE and other routine financial compliance requirements.
• Improve the quality and integration of financial, project and operational data.
• Help build and develop the finance team and determine the future structure of the finance function.
• Contribute actively to leadership discussions, business planning and risk management.
   

About you

You will be an experienced and confident finance professional who is equally comfortable working through detailed financial information and presenting commercial recommendations to senior leaders.

You should have:

• Previous experience as a Finance Manager, Management Accountant or in a similar hands-on finance role.
• Strong experience of monthly management accounts, budgeting, forecasting and cash-flow management.
• The ability to translate financial information into clear, practical commercial insight.
• Strong spreadsheet and financial-systems skills.
• Experience improving or implementing financial systems, reporting tools or scalable processes.
• Excellent attention to detail, sound judgement and the ability to manage competing priorities.
• The confidence to work closely with Directors, managers and non-finance colleagues.

A recognised accountancy qualification, part-qualification or substantial equivalent experience would be welcomed.

Experience within construction, property services, social housing, energy efficiency or renewables would be particularly beneficial, as would knowledge of project costing, work in progress, contract margins, grants and CIS.
