Senior Fire Engineer
Salary: £50,000 – £70,000 + Bonus - DOE
Location: Hybrid Working (Home-Based with Site Visits as Required)

Role Overview
The Senior Fire Engineer will play a key role in delivering advanced fire engineering services across a diverse portfolio of construction and property projects in the UK and internationally.
This position involves leading the development of fire safety strategies, undertaking complex fire risk assessments, reviewing designs, and ensuring full compliance with current fire safety legislation and standards. The role also includes mentoring junior engineers and contributing to the technical and commercial success of the business.
You will work closely with architects, clients, design teams, and approving authorities to ensure fire safety is fully integrated into project delivery from concept through to completion.
Key Responsibilities
Fire Engineering & Risk Assessment
Conduct fire safety assessments for new and existing buildings in line with relevant UK regulations and standards.
Carry out detailed fire risk assessments and site inspections across a range of project types.
Review architectural and engineering designs to ensure compliance with fire safety requirements.
Prepare technical fire safety reports and supporting documentation.
Fire Strategy Development
Develop and review fire safety strategies for buildings at all stages of design and construction.
Produce evacuation strategies, smoke control approaches, and suppression system recommendations.
Ensure fire strategies are integrated into wider building design and coordination processes.
Technical Delivery & Compliance
Prepare and review fire safety documentation, compliance reports, and submissions.
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of fire safety legislation, standards, and industry best practice.
Ensure all outputs meet required regulatory and quality standards.
Collaboration & Client Engagement
Work closely with clients, design teams, contractors, and approval authorities.
Attend design workshops, client meetings, and site inspections as required.
Provide clear and practical fire safety advice throughout project delivery.
Communicate fire safety strategies effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Leadership & Mentoring
Mentor and support junior engineers and graduates.
Contribute to internal training sessions, CPD activities, and knowledge sharing.
Support workload planning and project delivery across the team.
Promote high standards of technical excellence and quality assurance.
Commercial & Strategic Input
Support project budgeting, invoicing awareness, and commercial delivery.
Contribute to business growth through client relationships and technical input.
Provide strategic insight to senior leadership on fire engineering delivery.
Continuous Development
Maintain and develop professional competence in fire engineering.
Work towards Chartered Engineer status with the Institution of Fire Engineers or equivalent body.
Engage with ongoing CPD and technical development opportunities.
Qualifications
Required Experience
Minimum 5+ years’ experience in fire engineering consultancy, fire safety design, or compliance.
Strong working knowledge of UK fire safety legislation including Approved Document B and BS 9999.
Experience delivering fire risk assessments, fire strategies, and site inspections.
Proven ability to manage projects across residential, commercial, and mixed-use developments.
Education
Bachelor’s degree (BEng / BSc or equivalent) in:
Fire Engineering / Fire Safety Engineering
Mechanical Engineering
Civil Engineering
Structural Engineering
Building Services Engineering
Master’s degree in Fire Engineering or Fire Safety Engineering is desirable.
Professional progression towards or achievement of Chartered Engineer status is highly desirable.
Membership of the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) or similar professional body preferred.
Skills & Competencies
Strong understanding of fire dynamics and building fire safety principles.
Knowledge of fire safety codes and standards (e.g. Approved Document B, BS 9999).
Ability to use design and engineering software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and CFD tools.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects.
Confident client-facing ability and stakeholder management experience.
Full UK driving licence and willingness to undertake site visits.
Fire Modelling & Technical Tools
The role may involve working with advanced fire engineering tools, including:
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software such as FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator) and FLACS
Zone modelling tools such as CFAST and BRANZFire
Evacuation modelling and performance-based design tools
These tools are used to simulate fire development, smoke movement, and occupant evacuation scenarios to support performance-based fire engineering design.
