Overview

A Fire & Security Service & Maintenance Engineer is responsible for the installation, maintenance, servicing, commissioning, and repair of fire detection systems, intruder alarms, CCTV, access control systems, emergency lighting, and other life-safety and security technologies.

The role also includes carrying out small works and system upgrades as required. The engineer is responsible for ensuring all systems remain compliant, reliable, and fully operational across commercial, industrial, and residential environments.

Key Responsibilities

Service, maintain, and repair fire alarm systems, intruder alarms, CCTV, access control systems, and emergency lighting.

Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) in accordance with current industry standards and manufacturer guidelines.

Diagnose faults and implement effective solutions to restore system functionality.

Install, commission, and upgrade fire and security systems as required.

Ensure compliance with relevant British Standards, industry regulations, and certification requirements.

Complete accurate documentation, including service reports, maintenance certificates, and asset records.

Provide technical support and professional advice regarding system performance, maintenance requirements, and upgrade opportunities.

Participate in an on-call rota to provide emergency support outside normal working hours.

Maintain tools, equipment, vehicles, and test instruments to a high standard.

Adhere to all health and safety procedures, site-specific requirements, and company policies.

Skills & Experience

Proven experience servicing and maintaining fire alarm and/or electronic security systems.

Strong understanding of relevant industry standards and regulatory requirements.

Ability to read technical drawings, wiring diagrams, and system schematics.

Excellent fault-finding and problem-solving skills.

Good communication and customer service skills.

Ability to work independently and manage workload effectively.

Full UK driving licence.

Desirable Qualifications

Industry-recognised fire alarm training and certification.

Electrical qualifications such as NVQ Level 3 or equivalent.

Experience working with a variety of fire detection, alarm, CCTV, access control, and intruder alarm systems.

Knowledge of IP networking and associated technologies for modern security systems.

IPAF certification or willingness to obtain certification.

Working Hours, Call-Out & Overtime

Standard Hours

  • Monday to Friday: 8:30am – 5:30pm

On-Call Rota

A call-out rota is in place with standby payments as follows:

  • £25 per day (Monday to Friday)
  • £50 per day (Weekends)
  • £100 per day (Bank Holidays)

Call-Out Payments

  • Out-of-hours call-outs are paid from the time the engineer leaves home until their return home.

Overtime Rates

  • Time and a half: Monday to Saturday
  • Double time: Sundays and Bank Holidays

Travel & Subsistence

Work is primarily located within London and the surrounding counties, although occasional travel elsewhere within the UK may be required.

Where overnight stays are necessary:

  • £100 net subsistence payment per night
  • Hotel accommodation and breakfast provided and paid for in advance

Holiday Entitlement

  • 20 days annual leave plus statutory/public holidays.
  • Annual leave increases by 1 additional day per year of service, up to a maximum of 25 days.

Reporting Structure

This position reports to the Service & Installation Engineering Manager.
