Fleet Controller

Ford & Stanley Select

The Opportunity

A growing rail freight and wagon maintenance organisation is seeking a Fleet Controller to join its Fleet team on an initial fixed-term contract to provide maternity cover, with longer-term opportunities possible for the right individual.

This is a pivotal role, acting as the link between customers, maintenance providers and internal stakeholders to ensure maintenance activity is planned and delivered effectively across the fleet. You'll take ownership of customer accounts, coordinate maintenance schedules and play a key role in operational delivery.

The role would suit someone with experience in planning, scheduling, logistics or coordination who enjoys problem-solving, working with multiple priorities and operating in a fast-paced environment. Rail experience is not essential; attitude, initiative and the ability to learn are valued more highly.

The Situation

This requirement has arisen due to maternity leave within the Fleet team. The successful individual is expected to join by September/October to allow for a full handover before the current incumbent leaves around Christmas.

The Fleet team plans and coordinates maintenance activities across a large wagon fleet, liaising with customers, scheduling maintenance, coordinating resources and ensuring work is completed and invoiced correctly. As the organisation continues to grow, this appointment is viewed as an investment in future capability rather than simply short-term cover.

Team & Culture

Reporting to the Fleet Manager, you will join a close-knit team comprising:

  • Fleet Manager
  • Two Fleet Controllers
  • Fleet Administrator

The culture is collaborative, supportive and built on trust. Employees are encouraged to learn, ask questions and develop, with managers adopting a coaching rather than micromanagement approach. The organisation also prides itself on being family-friendly and flexible, with many employees enjoying long careers within the business.

Candidate Profile

We're looking for someone who can demonstrate:

  • Planning, scheduling, logistics or coordination experience.
  • Strong organisation and time management skills.
  • Excellent communication and customer-facing ability.
  • Confidence using IT systems and learning new processes.
  • Accountability, initiative and a proactive mindset.
  • Problem-solving skills and adaptability.
  • A genuine desire to learn and develop.

Rail experience and formal qualifications are beneficial but not essential. Greater emphasis is placed on attitude, potential and cultural fit.
