Full Time Specialist 1:1 SEN Tutor

Complex SEND / Autism / Anxiety / Alternative Provision

Schedule: Monday-Friday, 9am-12pm and 2pm-5pm

We are seeking an experienced, patient and adaptable 1:1 Tutor to provide a bespoke educational package for a Year 10 student in Peterborough.

This is a specialist role supporting a young person with Autism Spectrum Disorder, mild-moderate learning disability, significant anxiety and complex sensory needs. The tutor will help re-engage the student with education and support progress towards EHCP outcomes and preparation for adulthood.

A has a strong interest in trains, transport and travel, with excellent recall of transport routes and facts. He also has strong mathematical ability and enjoys chemistry and physics.

A responds particularly well to clear explanations, logic, structure and predictable routines. His interests should be used to encourage engagement and connect learning to practical, real-life situations, while gradually broadening his learning beyond preferred topics.

A has a severe phobia and anxiety relating to insects and associated environmental triggers. Exposure can cause significant distress, nausea, vomiting and an acute flight response.

The tutor must:

• Avoid triggering imagery and unnecessary references to phobia-related subjects.

• Check books, worksheets, videos and online resources before use.

• Adapt materials where required.

• Maintain a calm, predictable and structured environment.

• Keep windows closed in line with agreed arrangements.

• Avoid unplanned exposure to outdoor environments that may cause anxiety.

• Be aware that certain words, images and associations may act as triggers.

• Follow agreed risk assessments and safety procedures.

• Provide reassurance during periods of heightened anxiety.

• Allow access to a safe, low-stimulation space when required.

The tutor will deliver a structured, engaging and differentiated programme, with regular movement and regulation opportunities.

Learning should include:

• English/Literacy: reading, writing, spelling and comprehension.

• Mathematics: continued development towards GCSE readiness.

• Science: building on interests in chemistry and physics.

• Communication: conversation, listening and responding to others.

• Life skills: money, time, travel and practical learning.

• Preparation for adulthood: independence, community awareness and employability.

• Emotional regulation: recognising emotions and using agreed strategies.

• Physical activity: suitable indoor exercise and sensory movement.

A's interests in trains and transport should be used as a positive starting point for learning.

The tutor will support A to:

We are looking for someone with experience supporting young people with autism, complex SEND, anxiety, learning disabilities, sensory needs or significant barriers to education.

Experience of alternative provision, EOTIS or working with EHCPs is highly desirable.

A background in specialist teaching, SEND, behaviour support, psychology or alternative education would be advantageous.

A may have limited awareness of danger, particularly when anxious or dysregulated. The tutor must provide appropriate supervision and follow agreed safety plans and risk assessments.

The package may include carefully planned community-based learning. Any community activity must be appropriately planned and risk assessed.
