About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and motivated General Foreman to join one of our growing civil engineering and groundworks contractors. This is an excellent opportunity for a strong site leader to oversee the successful delivery of multiple groundworks packages while managing a workforce of approximately 40 groundworkers across a range of commercial and infrastructure projects.
The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently, on programme, and to the highest quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, supervise, and coordinate a team of approximately 40 groundworkers and subcontractors.
- Plan and manage daily site activities to achieve programme milestones.
- Ensure all work is carried out safely and in accordance with company policies and statutory regulations.
- Conduct daily briefings, toolbox talks, and site inductions.
- Allocate labour, plant, and materials effectively to maximise productivity.
- Monitor workmanship and maintain high quality standards throughout the project.
- Liaise closely with Site Managers, Project Managers, Engineers, clients, and subcontractors.
- Identify and resolve site issues before they impact programme or budget.
- Ensure compliance with drawings, specifications, and project documentation.
- Maintain accurate site records, including labour returns, plant usage, and daily progress reports.
- Promote a positive safety culture and maintain high standards of housekeeping across all work areas.
Essential Requirements
- Proven experience as a General Foreman within civil engineering and groundworks.
- Demonstrable experience managing large site teams of 30–40 operatives or more.
- Strong knowledge of groundworks including:
- Foundations
- Drainage
- Roads and sewers
- Earthworks
- Concrete works
- External works
- Excellent leadership, organisational, and communication skills.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
- Strong understanding of health, safety, environmental, and quality requirements.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
Preferred Qualifications
- SSSTS or SMSTS
- CSCS Gold or Black Card
- First Aid at Work
- Temporary Works Awareness
- CPCS or NPORS (desirable)
