We're looking for a General Operative to join a well-established structural steel business, supporting the safe movement, storage and preparation of steel products and fabricated components. Working as part of an experienced operations team, you'll play a key role in ensuring materials are handled safely, customer orders are prepared accurately and the yard and workshop operate efficiently.
The Role
As a General Operative, you'll support a variety of workshop and yard activities, ensuring steel products are safely loaded, unloaded, stored and prepared for dispatch. You'll also help maintain excellent housekeeping standards and contribute to a safe and organised working environment.
This is a physically active role suited to someone who enjoys hands-on work and takes pride in delivering high standards.
Key Responsibilities
Load and unload structural steel sections and fabricated components.
Prepare, check and securely band fabricated items ready for dispatch.
Organise materials within the yard to support efficient operations.
Carry out general labouring and yard operative duties.
Operate a Counterbalance Forklift Truck (where authorised).
Assist with stock control and material movements.
Maintain high standards of housekeeping across the workshop and yard.
Handle materials safely using correct manual handling techniques.
Work closely with colleagues to meet production and dispatch deadlines.
Follow all Health & Safety procedures and promote a safe working environment.
About You
We're looking for someone who is reliable, safety-conscious and enjoys working as part of a team.
You'll ideally have:
Previous experience working as a General Operative, Yard Operative or Labourer.
Experience within a steel fabrication, steel stockholding, manufacturing, construction or heavy industrial environment.
A valid Counterbalance Forklift Truck licence.
Good understanding of Health & Safety procedures.
Experience handling heavy materials.
Strong communication skills and a positive attitude.
The ability to work independently and as part of a team.
A strong work ethic with excellent reliability and punctuality.
Desirable
Experience working with structural steel or fabricated steelwork.
Previous experience in a steel stockyard or fabrication workshop.
Overhead crane experience or additional material handling qualifications.
Working Hours
Monday - Thursday: 7:30am - 4:30pm
Friday: 7:30am - 12:30pm
