Location: Haverhill
Duration: Approximately 4–5 weeks
Rate: £255 for 8hr days £295 for 10hr days
Start: 01.09.2026
Job Type: Temporary / Freelance
Required: SSSTS & CSCS
Job Description
We are looking for an experienced and practical General Site Supervisor to work on a commercial flat-roof refurbishment project in Haverhill.
You will be working on behalf of the roofing contractor and will be responsible for supervising their operatives and works only.
The Main Contractor's Site Manager will retain overall responsibility for the site, so this is not a position requiring you to manage the entire construction project.
Instead, we need someone who can confidently take responsibility for the roofing contractor's day-to-day activities, ensuring operatives are working safely, RAMS and permit controls are followed and communication with the Main Contractor remains clear.
Previous roofing experience would be advantageous but is not essential. We are primarily looking for a highly experienced construction Site Supervisor who is practical, safety-conscious and confident managing site operatives.
Key Duties
Day-to-day responsibilities will include:
Supervising the roofing contractor's operatives and works
Maintaining site compliance throughout the works
Liaising directly with the Main Contractor's Site Manager regarding daily activities, access and coordination
Arranging, receiving and closing out daily permits
Checking that RAMS, permits and associated control measures are being correctly followed
Monitoring Health & Safety standards throughout the working day
Acting as the designated Fire Watch during heat-producing / hot works
Remaining continuously present while fire-watch cover is required
Stopping relevant works if the required fire-watch cover cannot be maintained
Carrying out regular inspections of working areas
Monitoring housekeeping and general site safety
Completing daily site records
Carrying out photographic checks and providing progress updates
Reporting incidents, unsafe conditions or changes to the planned method immediately
Communicating effectively with operatives, management and the Main Contractor
Ensuring works remain organised, compliant and safely controlled throughout the project
Requirements
Applicants must have:
Valid SSSTS
Valid CSCS card
All relevant certification in date
Strong previous experience working as a Site Supervisor / General Site Supervisor
Experience supervising construction operatives and subcontract works
Good understanding of RAMS and permit-to-work systems
Strong Health & Safety awareness
Confidence challenging unsafe working practices and stopping works where necessary
Ability to communicate effectively with both site operatives and management
Good organisational and record-keeping skills
A practical, hands-on approach to site supervision
Full PPE
Recent relevant supervisory references
Availability to commit to approximately 4–5 weeks
Advantageous
The following would be beneficial but are not essential:
SMSTS
Previous roofing / flat-roofing experience
Previous experience supervising refurbishment works
Experience working within a Principal Contractor's permit system
Fire Safety / Fire Marshal experience
Hot Works / Fire Watch experience
First Aid
Hot Works and Fire Watch training will be provided for the successful candidate.
The Ideal Candidate
We are looking for someone who is highly experienced, confident and practical rather than someone who simply holds the required tickets.
You must be comfortable managing operatives, challenging unsafe practices, working within a Principal Contractor's permit system and taking responsibility for ensuring the roofing contractor's works remain compliant.
You will have the Main Contractor's Site Manager above you retaining overall responsibility for the site, but you must be capable of independently managing and supervising the roofing contractor's activities day to day.
Equal Opportunities
