The role 

Ferrovial Construction is seeking a Graduate Geotechnical Engineer to join the HS2 Track infrastructure project during its initial design phase, which will run alongside the completion of main works contracts currently at their peak.

This role sits within our design delivery team and focuses on the performance of earthworks and foundations delivered by the main works contractors. As a Graduate Geotechnical Engineer, you will help assess ground-track interaction and support the coordination of geotechnical factors that influence railway track performance.

The Ferrovial 2-year graduate development programme is designed to develop personal, professional and technical skills through a blended approach. You will work under the supervision of our Design Integration Lead and in collaboration with the site team.

Location: Euston, London

Flexibility to travel to Birmingham when required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the assessment of earthworks performance, including settlement, consolidation, and seasonal heave.
  • Review geotechnical reports, ground investigation data, and design outputs.
  • Contribute to the development of track–ground interaction models and technical studies.
  • Support interpretation of instrumentation and monitoring data (settlement markers, inclinometers, etc.).
  • Work with multidisciplinary teams to integrate geotechnical considerations into track and civil designs.
  • Identify and assess risks associated with differential settlement at transitions (e.g. embankment–structure interfaces).
  • Support development of mitigation measures (e.g. ground improvement, transition solutions).
  • Review drawings, specifications, and design deliverables for geotechnical inputs.
  • Liaise with construction teams to ensure geotechnical risks are understood and managed during delivery.
  • Attend site and design coordination meetings in London and/or Birmingham.
  • Support the resolution of geotechnical issues during construction.
  • Assist in reviewing and validating monitoring reports and construction records.
  • Support identification of geotechnical risks, opportunities, and change events.
  • Contribute to technical inputs for processes such as NCRs, change events, and departures.
  • Assist with technical assurance during design, construction, and handover.
  • Promote efficient and buildable solutions through value engineering.
  • Promote safe-by-design principles and geotechnical risk management.
  • Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards.

Skills and Competence

We are looking for graduates with:

  • Degree or master’s in engineering or related discipline (for example Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering)

  • Commercial awareness and an understanding of the industry
  • Familiar with all Microsoft packages

  • Understanding of earthworks behaviour (settlement, consolidation, shrink–swell/heave). Track–ground interaction, including differential settlement. Effects of dynamic loading on soils

-CSCS Card

Essential:

Must have right to work in the UK by the start of employment and throughout the entirety of the graduate program.
