Graduate Manufacturing Engineer
Position: Graduate Manufacturing Engineer

Employment Type: Permanent Graduate Manufacturing Engineer required in Birmingham, West Midlands for our client.
Our client is a specialist UK precision manufacturing business supplying components and tooling into the aerospace and energy sectors, working with major blue-chip customers. Due to continued growth and future succession planning, they are looking to invest in a Graduate Engineer who can be developed into a highly capable Manufacturing Engineer and, longer term, progress into a senior engineering or management position.
This is a hands-on engineering role with a structured 12-month training programme covering Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM), precision manufacturing, tooling design, inspection, quality and continuous improvement. The successful graduate will gain practical experience working with complex components to extremely tight tolerances and will be supported by experienced engineers and a dedicated mentor.
Graduate Manufacturing Engineer Job Overview
● Complete structured training in EDM processes, including wire EDM and spark erosion
● Develop an understanding of electrical discharge machining principles, machine controls, electrode/wire wear, flushing, spark energy and process variables
● Learn to read and interpret engineering drawings, tolerances, datums, geometric tolerances and surface finish requirements
● Gain practical experience supporting machine setups, workholding, datum setting, programme checks and first-off inspections
● Develop knowledge of precision manufacturing and materials commonly used within aerospace, including difficult-to-machine and hardened materials
● Assist with micron-level inspection and understand how measurement results are used to control and improve manufacturing processes
● Support the design and development of tooling and fixtures to improve repeatability, rigidity and efficiency
● Work alongside experienced engineers and production staff to identify and resolve manufacturing issues
● Contribute to continuous improvement projects focused on quality, lead time, tooling life, repeatability and production efficiency
● Prepare setup notes, tooling recommendations, process documentation and other engineering information
● Develop an understanding of aerospace quality requirements, traceability, inspection and non-conformance processes
● Progress towards taking responsibility for selected jobs from drawing review through to setup, machining, inspection and completion
● Present and implement improvement ideas and develop commercial awareness around cost, risk and manufacturing efficiency
Graduate Manufacturing Engineer Job Requirements
● Degree or HNC/HND in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Production Engineering or a similar engineering discipline
● Strong interest in manufacturing, machining and practical engineering
● Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, with an understanding of tolerances and technical specifications
● Good analytical and problem-solving skills
● A practical, hands-on approach with a willingness to spend time within a manufacturing/workshop environment
● Keen to learn specialist manufacturing processes, particularly EDM and precision machining
● Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with engineers, production staff and customers
● Organised and methodical approach, with a strong focus on quality and accuracy
● Graduate-level experience (0-2 years) from a placement, internship, university project or hands-on engineering/manufacturing environment would be advantageous
