Psychology & Sociology Graduates Wanted – SEN Teaching Assistant

Are you a Psychology or Sociology graduate looking to gain hands-on experience supporting children with autism and additional learning needs?

Pertemps Education Network is working in partnership with a welcoming primary school in Brixton to recruit a motivated, compassionate and enthusiastic Graduate SEN Teaching Assistant to support pupils with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), communication difficulties and social, emotional and developmental needs.

This is an excellent opportunity for graduates considering careers in educational psychology, clinical psychology, child psychology, social work, mental health or specialist education. You will gain valuable practical experience working directly with children, developing your understanding of autism, child development, behaviour and inclusive learning.

Working alongside experienced teachers and SEN professionals, you will help pupils overcome barriers to learning, develop their communication skills and build the confidence and independence needed to thrive in the classroom.

As a Graduate SEN Teaching Assistant, your responsibilities will include:
  • Providing tailored 1:1 and small-group support to primary-aged pupils with autism and additional needs.
  • Supporting children's communication, social interaction and emotional development.
  • Helping pupils access classroom learning through adapted activities and structured teaching approaches.
  • Encouraging positive behaviour, emotional regulation and engagement with learning.
  • Using visual supports and appropriate strategies to help children understand routines and transitions.
  • Supporting pupils to develop independence, confidence and positive relationships with peers.
  • Observing children's responses to different approaches and working with teachers to adapt support accordingly.
  • Collaborating with the class teacher, SENCO and wider school team to support individual learning targets.
The Ideal CandidateThe school is particularly interested in candidates who have a genuine interest in autism, psychology and understanding human behaviour.
You should ideally have:
  • A degree in Psychology, Sociology, Social Sciences, Criminology or a related subject; relevant experience and transferable skills may also be considered.
  • A strong interest in autism, child development, social communication and inclusive education.
  • Experience working with children through schools, youth work, tutoring, mentoring, volunteering or care settings.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • A patient, empathetic and resilient approach to supporting children with diverse needs.
  • The ability to work collaboratively as part of a supportive school team.
  • A willingness to learn specialist SEN strategies and develop your practical experience.
Previous experience supporting children with SEN or autism is desirable but not essential for the right graduate with a positive attitude and a genuine commitment to the role.

Why Apply?
  • Ideal graduate experience: Build practical skills relevant to future careers in psychology, social work, mental health and education.
  • Specialist autism experience: Develop your understanding of autistic pupils and their individual learning profiles.
  • Behaviour and development: Gain insight into social communication, emotional regulation and child development.
  • Professional development: Learn from experienced teachers and SEN specialists.
  • Meaningful work: Make a positive difference to children's education, wellbeing and independence.
  • Long-term opportunity: Develop your experience and establish yourself within a primary school environment.
