Graduate Engineer - Site Supervision / Structural Engineering Pathway

An established consulting engineering practice based in Edinburgh is seeking a Graduate Engineer for a role combining an initial site-based placement with a longer-term graduate structural engineering position.

The successful candidate will spend approximately the first six months in a predominantly site-based role, assisting with supervision and construction monitoring duties on a significant ground engineering project. Following this initial period, the role is intended to transition into an office-based graduate structural engineering position within the firm's structural engineering team.

Applicants should be fully aware of this arrangement from the outset. The initial site-based period forms an important part of the role and is designed to provide valuable practical experience of construction activities, site procedures, contractor liaison, site record keeping, and communication between site operations and the design office.



The Initial Site-Based Role;

During the site-based period, responsibilities will include:

  • Attending site on a full-time basis.

  • Observing and recording the progress of construction and ground engineering works.

  • Reviewing works against drawings, specifications and agreed details.

  • Preparing site notes, reports and photographic records.

  • Liaising with contractors, engineers and other members of the project team.

  • Identifying and reporting technical queries or potential issues to senior staff.

  • Assisting with communication between site and the design office.



The Graduate Structural Engineering Role;

Following the site-based period, the role will develop into a graduate structural engineering position involving:

  • Structural design under the supervision of experienced engineers.

  • Assisting with the development and production of drawings, calculations, specifications and reports.

  • Reviewing architectural drawings and developing an understanding of structural layouts and load paths.

  • Attending inspections and design meetings where appropriate.

  • Assisting with surveys, inspections and structural reports.

  • Developing knowledge of UK design codes, Building Standards and construction practice.

  • Progressing towards professional development and chartered status.



About You

Candidates should have:

  • A BEng or MEng in Civil and/or Structural Engineering.

  • A genuine interest in building structures and structural design.

  • A willingness to spend the initial period of the role working on site.

  • A practical and proactive approach with a desire to learn.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • The ability to work effectively with contractors, consultants and colleagues.

  • A methodical approach to site observation, record keeping and reporting.

Graduate or Student Membership of the Institution of Structural Engineers would be advantageous.



Working Arrangements

Due to the nature of the initial site-based duties, full-time site attendance will be required during the first phase of the role. Some flexibility may be available for reporting, administration and office-based duties, subject to project requirements.
