The Role

Our client is hiring a Principal Grid Engineer. The Principal Grid Engineer provides technical authority and senior leadership for transmission and distribution grid connection activities across the renewable energy portfolio. The role provides strategic leadership in the development, optimisation and delivery of grid infrastructure associated with renewable generation, energy storage and large demand customer projects.

The role leads complex engineering studies, supports grid strategy development, manages critical technical interfaces with stakeholders and ensures compliance with all relevant Grid Code, connection policy and regulatory requirements. The Principal Grid Engineer provides technical assurance, mentoring and specialist expertise across the Grid Team while supporting the wider business in achieving commercially optimal and technically robust project outcomes.

 

The main duties and responsibilities of the role will include the following:

 

  • Provide expert electrical and grid engineering support across renewable energy, energy storage, and large energy user projects.
  • Act as the technical authority for grid connections, transmission networks, Grid Code compliance, and related engineering standards.
  • Develop and implement grid connection strategies, identifying network opportunities, constraints, reinforcement needs, and regulatory impacts on project delivery and value.
  • Manage Grid Connection Agreements, compliance obligations, and ensure alignment with Irish grid policies, Grid Code requirements, and industry best practices.
  • Monitor industry developments and represent the company at regulatory, industry, and stakeholder forums to influence policy and network development.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the Grid Team, promoting technical excellence, innovation, continuous improvement, and knowledge sharing.
  • Provide technical leadership and decision-making on complex grid connection, transmission, and compliance issues across the project portfolio.
  • Support organisational capability growth through technical assurance, specialist advice, and independent reviews of grid-related risks and opportunities.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with regulators, system operators, contractors, consultants, OEMs, and other key stakeholders.
  • Lead power system studies, network assessments, and optioneering activities to identify technically and commercially optimal connection solutions.
  • Oversee assessments relating to network capacity, fault levels, power flows, curtailment, reactive power requirements, and Grid Code compliance.
  • Provide strategic advice on grid-related risks, opportunities, network developments, and investment decisions.
  • Lead the delivery of major electrical and grid infrastructure projects through all phases, from feasibility and design to commissioning and operational handover.
  • Manage engineering and construction contracts, ensuring compliance with technical, commercial, contractual, and programme requirements.
  • Coordinate contractors, consultants, OEMs, and system operators while managing project risks, change control, claims, and key interfaces.
  • Oversee design, construction, testing, commissioning, and energisation activities to ensure safe, compliant, and cost-effective project delivery.
  • Monitor project performance and implement corrective actions to support successful outcomes.
  • Provide expert technical assurance and guidance on critical engineering deliverables and complex transmission-related matters.
  • Support senior management with strategic planning, business development, and investment decisions through specialist grid engineering expertise.
  • Develop and continuously improve grid engineering standards, procedures, and best practices across the renewable energy portfolio.
  • Comply with all company Health, Safety, and Welfare requirements.
  • Actively participate in performance management activities and contribute to achieving team and organisational objectives.

 

The Person

 

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualification, skills, knowledge, and attributes:

 

  • Hons Degree (Lvl 8 FETAC) in Electrical Engineering is essential. Postgraduate (Lvl 9 FETAC) qualification in a relevant discipline would be an advantage for this role.
  • 8+ years relevant experience with extensive exposure to Irish transmission and distribution systems.
  • Extensive technical experience in HV electrical design and consenting for kV substations, underground cables, and overhead line infrastructure.
  • Hands on experience in conducting power system & earthing studies including but not limited to power flow analysis, earthing studies, lightning studies using software such as CYMCAP, CDEGS, ELEK, PSS/e.
