Handyman
Calibre Search
Location: Fife
Salary: £30,000 basic
Permanent | Full Time | 40 hours per week
Paid Travel Time | Overtime | Van & Fuel Card | 33 Days Holiday | Private Healthcare
If you are the type of person who enjoys a varied working day rather than doing the same job repeatedly, this could be a good fit.
A permanent opportunity is available for an experienced Handyman or Handyperson to look after a number of busy retail properties across Fife and the surrounding area.
The position covers a broad range of general building and fabric maintenance. You could be dealing with a plumbing issue in the morning, repairing damaged flooring later in the day and carrying out some joinery or decorating work before heading home.
You will be mobile between sites, using a company van and managing your own workload with support from a central helpdesk and wider maintenance team.
What will you be doing?
The workload will cover a broad range of general building and fabric maintenance, including:
- Reactive repairs and planned maintenance across multiple retail locations
- Basic plumbing such as taps, toilets, sinks, urinals and associated fittings
- Investigating and clearing minor blockages
- Small carpentry and joinery repairs
- Replacing or repairing floor and wall tiles
- Vinyl flooring repairs and replacement
- General painting and decorating
- Minor roofing repairs and dealing with small leaks
- Gutter, gully and accessible drainage maintenance
- General building fabric repairs
- Minor brickwork and wall repairs
- Repairs and upkeep around external areas, yards and car parks
- Basic work around roller shutters, including identifying defects
- Assisting other trades when larger works are required
- Completing PPM and reactive jobs raised through the helpdesk
- Updating job information and completing paperwork using a PDA
- Making sure the vehicle, tools and equipment are maintained properly
The stores will remain operational while you are working, so being professional around customers, colleagues and store teams is important.
There is no requirement to be a fully qualified electrician or mechanical engineer. The emphasis is on practical building maintenance, fabric repairs and basic plumbing.
What kind of background are we looking for?
You don't need to come from one particular trade. The important thing is that you are practical, confident carrying out repairs and comfortable dealing with different types of work.
You could come from a background such as:
- Handyman / Handyperson
- Fabric Technician
- Building Maintenance
- Property Maintenance
- Multi-Skilled Maintenance
- Social Housing
- Facilities Management
- Retail Maintenance
- General Construction
Experience across areas such as plumbing, joinery, flooring, decorating, roofing or general building repairs would be useful.
A City & Guilds, NVQ or other relevant trade qualification would be beneficial, but practical experience is equally important.
You will also need:
- A full UK driving licence
- The ability to work independently across multiple locations
- Good practical fault-finding and repair skills
- Confidence dealing directly with site teams and customers
- Basic IT skills and the ability to use a PDA or mobile system
- A professional approach to health and safety
Package
- £30,000 basic salary
- 40 hours per week
- Paid travel time, in line with company policy
- Overtime available
- Company van
- Fuel card
- 33 days annual leave
- Private healthcare
- Private pension
- Life insurance
- Employee discount scheme
- Tools and equipment provided
- Permanent position
- Training and development opportunities
The opportunity
This is a good option for someone who enjoys being out and about rather than being based in one building every day.
You will have a defined geographical patch, a varied workload and the backing of a helpdesk and wider maintenance team. The contract provides a steady flow of work across established retail sites, while the range of repairs means no two days are necessarily the same.
If your background is in general maintenance, property repairs, fabric work, plumbing or a similar hands-on trade, this could be worth a conversation.
