Location: Digbeth, Birmingham
Temp Salary: £13.15 PAYE or £17.40 umbrella
Contract: Temporary sickness cover – initially two months, with the possibility of extension
Hours: 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 9am–5pm
Working arrangement: Fully site-based at Head Office
The Role
We are recruiting for a Health, Safety and Facilities Assistant to provide temporary sickness cover for an established homelessness charity and supported-housing provider.
Based at the organisation’s Head Office in Digbeth, you will provide practical and administrative support across health and safety, facilities management and property compliance.
You will help maintain accurate compliance records, coordinate maintenance and contractors, undertake routine workplace checks and monitor identified actions through to completion. You will also support fire-safety documentation, incident records, facilities supplies and the day-to-day administration of the Health, Safety and Facilities function.
This is a varied role requiring strong organisation, accurate record keeping and the confidence to identify and escalate safety or maintenance concerns appropriately.
Key Responsibilities
- Support routine workplace, facilities and health and safety inspections.
- Identify, record and escalate hazards, building defects and maintenance requirements.
- Maintain accurate fire-safety, statutory-compliance and facilities records.
- Monitor actions arising from inspections, audits and Fire Risk Assessments through to completion.
- Coordinate planned and reactive maintenance, contractors, servicing and repairs.
- Assist with risk assessments, COSHH records and accident or incident documentation.
- Maintain electronic compliance systems, reports, spreadsheets and action trackers.
- Monitor PPE, cleaning products and facilities supplies, ensuring safe storage where required.
- Process and track invoices, purchase orders, work orders and contractor costs, supporting budget monitoring and accurate financial reporting.
About You
We are looking for an organised and proactive candidate with experience supporting health and safety, facilities management, estates, maintenance or property compliance.
You should have:
- Previous experience within facilities, estates, maintenance, compliance or health and safety administration.
- Experience maintaining compliance records, certificates, inspection records or action trackers.
- Experience coordinating contractors, repairs, servicing or planned and reactive maintenance.
- An understanding of workplace inspections, hazard reporting and escalation procedures.
- Knowledge of fire safety, COSHH and general workplace health and safety requirements.
- Experience identifying and recording building defects or maintenance issues.
- The ability to monitor outstanding actions and follow them through to completion.
- Strong administration, organisation and record-keeping skills.
- Good IT skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and electronic record-management systems.
- Strong communication skills and a professional, customer-focused approach.
- The ability to communicate appropriately within an organisation supporting vulnerable young people
Candidates will be required to satisfy the appropriate Enhanced DBS requirements for the position.
Desirable Experience
It would be beneficial if you have:
- An IOSH, NEBOSH, IWFM or other relevant health and safety or facilities-management qualification.
- Experience within social housing, supported housing, charities, healthcare, education or residential services.
- Experience supporting fire-alarm checks, fire drills, emergency-lighting checks or Fire Risk Assessment actions.
- Experience assisting with workplace or COSHH risk assessments.
- Experience supporting accident and incident reporting.
- Experience reviewing or maintaining contractor RAMS and compliance documentation.
- Awareness of RIDDOR, PUWER, LOLER, ISO 45001 or ISO 14001 principles.
- Experience working in services supporting vulnerable people.
Formal NEBOSH qualifications are not essential where candidates can demonstrate relevant practical facilities, compliance, fire-safety or health and safety administration experience.
