About the role:
We are looking for an experienced and qualified Health & Safety Manager to join our team in Workington.
You will be responsible for developing and delivering the H&S Strategy (specifically tailored for our site’s current place in the journey, our aspirations and our culture); maintaining our Health & Safety procedures and systems; and taking a lead in driving improved behavioural safety within our teams.
Your duties will include :
- Champion a strong health and safety culture across all areas of the site through engagement, visibility and improvement.
- Responsible for implementing and maintaining all ISO standards at site.
- Ensure compliance with H&S legislation, company policies, and best practice.
- Lead the development, implementation, and review of health & safety policies, systems and procedures.
- Evaluate practices, procedures and facilities to assess risk and adherence to the law.
- Oversee workplace inspections, audits, and compliance checks, ensuring corrective actions are implemented.
- Conduct and review risk assessments, lead accident investigations, and implement corrective actions.
- Manage and lead incident investigations, root cause analyses, and develop preventive measures.
- You will make sure that work-related injuries and/or accidents are well-documented, properly kept and communicated to Site Manager and Department managers.
- If an accident is reportable under RIDDOR, it is the responsibility of the health & safety department to file this report with HSE. Communication with the Group Health and Safety Manager and the Site Manager, prior to this, is crucial to ensure we have all the correct details from the investigation.
- Develop, maintain, and regularly test emergency response plans (ERPs) for various scenarios (e.g., fire, chemical spills, natural disasters).
- Is responsible for keeping the following documents up to date for the site:
- Risk Assessments, Standard Operation Procedures, safe Systems of Work, PUWER Risk Assessments
- Collaborate with department heads to integrate safety into operational planning and decision-making.
- Recommend solutions to issues, improvement opportunities or new prevention methods.
- Organise/Minute/Implement actions from H&S Committee meetings.
- Support operational leaders in managing safe working practices, including machinery safety, manual handling, allergen control, and high-temperature processes.
- Stay updated on evolving HSE legislation and industry standards, updating company policies as needed.
- Act as the primary point of contact for regulatory bodies, external auditors and insurance providers.
- To prepare, as required, management reports on employee-related data to assist with the management and development of staff.
- Ensure staff are trained in their areas of work, e.g. CCP’s, SOPs and RA’s trained out in that particular area for each member of staff to ensure maximum safety for all employees.
- Update and maintain the Training Matrix for the site.
- Maintain training records and ensure ongoing employee competence in safety practices.
- Liaise with department managers to analyse & identify staff training and development needs and deliver out or arrange training programs to suit.
- Identify skill gaps and organize training, workshops, and career development programs for the HSE team.
- Participate in the co-ordination, development and delivery of the company induction program for new employees and deliver mandatory H&S training for them to carry out their duties before they start their role.
- Assign tasks, monitor progress, and ensure accountability for deliverables within the HSE team.
- Conduct regular team meetings to review performance, discuss safety issues, and plan activities.
- Promote team collaboration and ensure effective communication between HSE personnel and other departments.
Essential:
· NEBOSH General Certificate
(Diploma or working towards)
· IOSH Membership (Chartered status preferred)
· Experience with ISO 45001 & ISO 14001
· Experience and strong knowledge of UK H&S legislation and best practice.
· Strong working knowledge of food safety regulations and HACCP principles
· Full UK Driving License
Desirable:
· ISO 45001 Lead auditing experience – certified to chartered quality institute (CQI) and International Register of Certified Auditors (IRCA).
· Food Safety or HACCP qualification
