The Opportunity
Heavy engineering/ manufacturing business, is seeking an experienced and proactive Health & Safety Officer to join their Sheffield-based team.
This is a highly hands-on role, ideal for an HSE professional who thrives in a fast-paced manufacturing environment, enjoys being visible on the shop floor, and is passionate about driving positive behavioural change and safety culture.
Key Responsibilities
- Promote and embed a strong, positive health & safety culture across all levels of the business
- Develop, implement and maintain HSE policies, procedures, and management systems
- Conduct regular inspections, audits, and risk assessments, ensuring full compliance with UK legislation
- Investigate incidents and accidents, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions
- Prepare and review risk assessments, SOPs, and COSHH documentation
- Lead and support HSE meetings and initiatives
- Manage contractor safety and control processes
- Deliver new starter HSE inductions and support ongoing training programs
- Ensure the site maintains an "audit-ready" standard at all times
- Monitor, record, and report on HSE KPIs and performance data
- Support environmental management activities and compliance
- Stay up to date with current legislation and industry best practices
About You
- Proven experience in a Health & Safety role within a manufacturing or engineering environment
- NEBOSH General Certificate (or equivalent)
- Strong working knowledge of UK H&S legislation
- Experience conducting audits, investigations, and producing HSE documentation
- Confident communicator, able to engage both shop floor teams and senior leadership
- Proactive, solutions-focused mindset with the ability to influence change
- Full UK driving licence (travel between local sites may be required)
Desirable
- Experience within heavy manufacturing or metals environments
- Exposure to hot metal processes (e.g. melting, forging, hot rolling would be advantageous)
