Location: Suffolk
Salary: £70,000 – £75,000 per annum
Job Type: Permanent

The Role

We are currently recruiting for an experienced Health & Safety Manager to oversee health, safety and environmental compliance across a major healthcare facilities management contract in Suffolk.

The successful candidate will be responsible for monitoring workplace activities, ensuring the safety of employees, clients and subcontractors, and supporting the implementation of site-specific health and safety procedures.

This is a site-based position requiring a proactive Health & Safety professional who is confident working with operational and technical teams, conducting inspections and audits, investigating incidents and ensuring that appropriate controls are in place across a busy facilities management environment.

Key Responsibilities

The Health & Safety Manager will oversee the implementation and day-to-day management of the site's health and safety arrangements, ensuring company policies, contractual requirements and UK legislation are consistently followed.

You will conduct regular site inspections and safety audits, identify unsafe practices or conditions and work closely with management and operational teams to ensure corrective actions are implemented.

A key part of the role will be delivering and coordinating health and safety training, including regular toolbox talks, ensuring employees understand the hazards associated with their work and the appropriate control measures.

You will also oversee the development and review of Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS), ensuring that appropriate risk assessments and safe systems of work are in place before work commences.

The role will involve regular interaction with company management, client representatives, facilities management personnel, contractors and relevant regulatory bodies.

You will lead investigations into accidents, incidents and near misses, identifying root causes and developing appropriate corrective and preventative actions to reduce the likelihood of recurrence.

The successful candidate will also maintain accurate records relating to workplace incidents, inspections, training, audits and corrective actions, ensuring that all required documentation is maintained and available for review.

Where an immediate and serious safety risk is identified, you will have the authority to intervene and stop unsafe work until appropriate controls have been implemented.

About You

We are looking for an experienced Health & Safety professional with a minimum of five years' continuous experience within construction, facilities management, building services, engineering, operations and maintenance or another comparable environment.

You should have proven experience managing health and safety programmes, conducting workplace inspections and audits, undertaking risk assessments and implementing appropriate control measures.

You will need to be confident challenging unsafe practices and communicating effectively with employees, managers, subcontractors and senior stakeholders.

Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills are essential, alongside good working knowledge of Microsoft Office and the ability to produce clear and accurate health and safety documentation.

Experience working within healthcare, defence, critical environments, construction, engineering or other highly regulated environments would be advantageous.

Qualifications

The successful candidate should hold a recognised UK health and safety qualification, ideally:

NEBOSH National General Certificate or higher-level NEBOSH qualification

IOSH membership or relevant IOSH qualification

A recognised qualification or demonstrable experience in workplace risk assessment and health & safety management

First Aid at Work and CPR qualifications would be advantageous.

Candidates with equivalent qualifications and substantial relevant experience will also be considered.

You should also be able to demonstrate evidence of continuing professional development in health and safety, ideally through regular formal training and professional development activities.

Technical Knowledge

You should have a strong understanding of UK health and safety legislation and regulatory requirements, including the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations, CDM Regulations, COSHH, PUWER, LOLER and relevant workplace and fire safety legislation.

Experience developing and reviewing RAMS, Risk Assessments, Method Statements, COSHH Assessments and Activity/Task Risk Assessments would be highly advantageous.

Experience dealing with HSE requirements, accident and incident investigation, contractor management and safety audits is also desirable.
