Health & Safety Compliance Manager

Salary: £60,000-£65,000PA
Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm
Job Type: Full-time - Permanent

Barker Ross are recruiting on behalf of our client for an experienced Health & Safety Compliance Manager to oversee health, safety and environmental compliance across two metal recycling sites.

This is a varied, hands-on role where you'll be responsible for maintaining compliance, supporting operational teams and driving continuous improvement in health, safety and environmental standards across the business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and continually improve the company's Health & Safety Management Systems, policies and procedures across both sites.
  • Carry out regular site inspections and detailed internal audits covering site operations, offices and transport.
  • Produce, review and update risk assessments, safe systems of work and RAMS, including documentation for external demolition projects.
  • Deliver health and safety inductions for new starters, toolbox talks and ongoing training to promote a positive safety culture.
  • Maintain the employee training matrix, ensuring all mandatory training, machinery competencies and Driver CPC requirements remain up to date.
  • Investigate accidents, incidents and near misses, identify root causes and ensure corrective actions are implemented. Complete RIDDOR reporting where required.
  • Keep up to date with changes in Health & Safety and Environmental legislation, ensuring company compliance at all times.
  • Prepare and submit quarterly and annual waste returns.
  • Manage contractor compliance, including approvals, site inductions and monitoring safe working practices.
  • Coordinate health surveillance programmes and ensure recommendations are actioned where necessary.
  • Provide support with transport compliance activities.
  • Supervise and support the Health & Safety Apprentice/Administrator.
  • Analyse Health & Safety performance, identify trends and carry out gap analysis to support continuous improvement.

Key Skills

  • Previous experience working across multiple sites.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to engage employees and management at all levels.
  • Able to build positive working relationships and promote a strong health and safety culture.
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret and report Health & Safety data.
  • Well organised with the ability to manage competing priorities and work on your own initiative.
  • Confident using IT systems and producing compliance documentation and reports.
  • A proactive approach to identifying risks and driving improvements in Health, Safety and Environmental performance.

Essential Requirements

  • NEBOSH General Certificate.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Minimum of two years' experience in a Health & Safety management role.

Desirable

  • NEBOSH Diploma.
  • WAMITAB qualification.
  • Previous experience within the waste, recycling or construction sectors.
  • Knowledge of environmental permitting and environmental compliance
