About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and motivated HGV Mechanic / VMU Technician to join an on-site Vehicle Maintenance Unit (VMU). The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out first-line repairs and preventative maintenance on our truck and trailer fleet, helping to ensure maximum vehicle availability and compliance.
This role requires an individual who can thrive in a fast-paced environment, work effectively as part of a supportive team, and use their own initiative when required. A strong commitment to health and safety and maintaining high housekeeping standards is essential.

Key Responsibilities
- Carry out fault diagnosis and first-line repairs on trucks and trailers, including curtain repairs, lighting repairs, mirror replacements and step repairs.
- Conduct Preventative Maintenance Inspections (PMIs) on trailers to a high standard.
- Respond to vehicle defects and live issues presented by drivers, completing repairs where appropriate.
- Perform daily inspections of rolling stock and address minor defects to minimise fleet downtime.
- Ensure all maintenance activities comply with company policies, legal requirements and industry standards.
- Maintain a safe, clean and organised working environment in accordance with Health & Safety regulations.
- Complete all required maintenance records, inspection reports and compliance documentation accurately.
- Carry out weekly and monthly VMU checks and maintain audit trails.
- Monitor stock levels and communicate parts requirements to the VMU Team Leader.
- Support the wider maintenance team and undertake additional duties as reasonably requested by management.
About You
The ideal candidate will possess:
- A full UK driving licence
- Proven experience carrying out first-line repairs on HGV trucks and trailers
- Strong knowledge and experience of Preventative Maintenance Inspections (PMIs)
- Understanding of truck and trailer legal compliance requirements
- Excellent fault-finding and problem-solving skills
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Experience using maintenance and compliance systems accurately
- A proactive approach to health, safety and housekeeping standards
- The ability to work independently and as part of a team
- A strong track record of completing repairs efficiently and on time
