The OpportunityOur client is seeking an experienced and hands-on HGV Workshop Manager to lead their busy commercial vehicle workshop in Stoke-on-Trent.
This is an excellent opportunity for a knowledgeable HGV professional with strong leadership skills to oversee the maintenance, repair and compliance of a diverse fleet of commercial vehicles. The workshop works across virtually every major HGV manufacturer, make, model and specification, making this a varied and rewarding role for someone with broad technical expertise and strong diagnostic capabilities.
The successful candidate will be responsible for managing workshop operations, leading a team of technicians, maintaining compliance standards and ensuring vehicles are repaired and maintained efficiently to minimise downtime.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and supervise HGV technicians, mechanics and workshop staff.
- Plan, schedule and allocate daily maintenance and repair work.
- Ensure all vehicles are maintained in line with DVSA, MOT and Operator Licence requirements.
- Oversee vehicle inspections, servicing programmes, preventative maintenance and defect repairs.
- Ensure repairs and maintenance are completed to a high standard and within agreed timescales.
- Manage workshop productivity and ensure efficient use of labour resources.
- Control workshop costs, including labour, parts and external contractor expenditure.
- Order parts and maintain appropriate stock levels to support workshop operations.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, documentation and compliance reports.
- Investigate recurring mechanical faults and implement effective solutions to reduce downtime.
- Carry out quality control inspections on completed work.
- Ensure all workshop health and safety procedures are followed at all times.
- Liaise with transport teams, drivers, fleet management and senior leadership.
- Coordinate vehicle breakdown support and roadside recovery activities when required.
- Monitor technician performance, timekeeping, maintenance costs and vehicle defects.
- Ensure workshop tools, equipment and facilities remain safe, clean and compliant.
- Previous experience in HGV maintenance, engineering or workshop management.
- Strong technical knowledge of HGV mechanical, electrical and electronic systems.
- Proven experience supervising, leading or managing workshop technicians.
- A proactive approach to diagnostics and fault finding.
- Good knowledge of DVSA regulations, MOT standards and Operator Licence compliance.
- Strong planning, scheduling and organisational skills.
- Excellent communication and leadership abilities.
- Experience managing workshop costs, budgets and operational performance.
- The ability to work effectively under pressure and prioritise urgent repairs.
- A commitment to maintaining high safety and compliance standards.
- Class 1 (C+E) Licence.
- HGV maintenance and engineering experience.
- Strong understanding of workshop operations and vehicle maintenance planning.
- Experience leading teams within a commercial vehicle environment.
- Competitive salary of £45,000 - £55,000 per year, depending on experience.
- Monday to Friday working hours with no regular weekend requirement.
