Introduction to the Role

TeacherActive is proud to be working with a welcoming and highly inclusive primary school in Smethwick, Sandwell that is looking to appoint a confident and experienced Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) on a full-time basis.

The school serves a diverse community and is committed to ensuring every child receives the support and encouragement they need to succeed. They are looking for a proactive HLTA who can work effectively across the school, support class teachers and confidently lead learning when required.

The ideal candidate will hold a recognised HLTA qualification/status and have previous experience working within a primary school environment. Candidates with strong experience working at HLTA level will also be considered.

Due to the inclusive nature of the school, previous experience supporting pupils with SEND, EAL or additional learning needs would be particularly beneficial. The ability to speak an additional language alongside English would also be advantageous.

Candidate Requirements

The ideal HLTA will:

  • Ideally hold a recognised HLTA qualification/status.
  • Have previous experience working within a primary school.
  • Be available to work full-time, Monday to Friday.
  • Be confident leading whole-class learning when required.
  • Have experience supporting individuals and small groups of pupils.
  • Demonstrate strong behaviour and classroom management skills.
  • Be able to adapt learning activities for pupils of different abilities.
  • Have experience supporting pupils with SEND and/or EAL where possible.
  • Have strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrate a positive, proactive and flexible attitude.
  • Be confident working collaboratively with teachers and other support staff.
Key Responsibilities

As the HLTA, your responsibilities may include:

  • Supporting teachers with the delivery of engaging lessons and learning activities.
  • Leading whole-class learning during planned teacher absence or PPA where required.
  • Delivering targeted interventions to individuals and small groups.
  • Supporting pupils who require additional help to access the curriculum.
  • Adapting activities to meet different learning needs and abilities.
  • Supporting pupils with SEND and additional needs.
  • Promoting positive behaviour and maintaining clear classroom expectations.
  • Monitoring pupil engagement and providing feedback to teaching staff.
  • Building positive and professional relationships with pupils.
  • Working closely with teachers, SENCOs and other members of the school team.
  • Contributing to the school's inclusive and supportive learning environment.
Compliance Requirements

All applicants will be required to meet TeacherActive's safeguarding and compliance requirements, including:

  • Providing two professional references from recent employers.
  • Holding an Enhanced DBS registered on the Update Service.
  • If no suitable DBS is currently held, being willing to obtain a new Enhanced DBS through TeacherActive.
  • Having the right to work in the UK.
  • Completing all required safeguarding and compliance checks prior to placement.
